Though Select Home Warranty and Choice Home Warranty both offer appliance and systems coverage across their base plans, the specific inclusions and exclusions within each policy level are slightly different. Only Select reserves two of its coverage plans for appliance-only and system-only protection. Select also offers a few more optional coverage add-ons than Choice Home Warranty for lawn sprinkler systems and stand-alone freezers. Choice Home Warranty, on the other hand, has higher coverage limits than Select, capping per-item maximums at around $3,000 per year.
Select Home Warranty offers three base plan options: Bronze Care, Gold Care, and Platinum Care. Bronze Care is an appliance-only plan, covering eight kitchen and laundry items. Gold Care is a systems plan wrapping six built-in items. Platinum Care, Select’s most comprehensive coverage option, is a two-in-one variation of Bronze and Gold plus coverage for plumbing stoppages and garage door openers.

Select Home Warranty boasts a B rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB), whereas Choice Home Warranty has a D. Neither company is officially accredited with the organization. Based on our research, Choice Home Warranty suffered a drastic reduction in its rating solely because of a class action lawsuit filed against the company in 2019 by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. The dispute has since been settled, though Choice’s rating has yet to recover despite its effort to rectify its claim processes.
We’ve excerpted a handful of positive and negative customer reviews below to help you get a feel for the policyholder experience with either company.

Here are a few of the recent reviews from SHW customers:
“Technician who came to fix our counter top stove was very friendly and did an awesome job fixing the issue. He cleaned up and made sure everything was back in its place. He explained everything in detail from the initial visit to the actual day of repair. Five-star rating for the technician.”
– Joel M., 08/01/2022
“I recently had to file a claim for my HVAC system, and the claim was denied because the SHW said that the problem wasn’t covered by the home warranty. I called back and said that the issue was not what the HVAC company said, because they didn’t check correctly (After less than 5 minutes visits, not even making the unit run). SHW is going to send me another professional and promised to not charge for the visit.”
– Patricia A., 09/02/2020
Here are a few recent reviews from CHW customers:
“I called for a quote for a home warranty for a home that I’m in the process of buying. I was given an almost $500 senior discount. Also, the policy start date was adjusted to 4 days earlier than the 30-day wait period in order to have it start on the closing date of the property purchase. The representative was very accommodating.”
– Edna M., 08/09/2022
“I contacted Choice because many people spoke highly of them. When I called, the representative was on SUPER sales mode. I couldn’t even ask questions without him asking me what I wanted to buy. They need to work on their customer service skills.” – Tiffany A., 08/05/2022

As two industry-leading home warranty companies, whether you go with Choice Home Warranty or Select Home Warranty, it’s hard to go wrong. Both service providers offer similar monthly rates with generous discounts for new joiners. Though Choice charges a slightly more expensive service fee than Select, both sit below the industry maximum of $125. Select and Choice offer similar lists of additional coverage riders, though Choice’s are priced a few dollars less per month than Select’s.
Both Choice Home Warranty and Select Home Warranty are proven reputable providers with impressive customer bases and comprehensive home warranty coverage. The best home warranty company for you out of these two will depend on what you’re prioritizing coverage for in your home.
For homeowners primarily looking for home appliance coverage alone, Select Home Warranty might make more sense for you given its appliance-only option. For anyone looking to cover both appliances and systems, you’ll find more affordable combo coverage through Choice.
Select Home Warranty charges a $60 service fee each time you file a new claim for a covered issue.
At House Method, transparency and trust are our most important values for the reader.
To create this rating system, our team spent hours researching over 60 companies, analyzing 2500+ key data points, getting the thoughts and opinions of 1000+ homeowners, and speaking to home warranty company representatives directly. We also dug into the fine print on each company’s service agreement to ensure no detail was left out.
We developed an objective home warranty review and rating methodology to score each home warranty company based on several criteria. We used a five-point scale with a point index ranging from 0.00 to 1.00. The minimum awardable value is 0.0, whereas 1.00 is the maximum. These numeric points are translated into star ratings, using whole star increments between one and five.
