There’s something about a great romantic comedy that almost every person can relate to. Even if you’re not a fan of sappy romance movies, the light-hearted humor in these films makes them at least slightly enjoyable.
Our team at Today’s Homeowner decided to take a closer look at rom-coms and figure out what the most popular romantic comedy is in each state. To get this data, we surveyed 4,629 Americans and asked them to choose their favorite romantic comedy of the century.
Here’s what we found:
It’s no secret that the majority of Americans are big fans of “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” with 19 states claiming it as their favorite. Something about Steve Carell must have a way of sticking with people.
A close second among Americans is “Bridesmaids,” capturing the hearts of 11 states. Perhaps competition between maid of honor and bridesmaid is relatable for a few bridal parties out there.
It’s worth noting that “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Bridesmaids”—the top two winning rom-coms—make up 30 out of 50 states.
Other favorites are “13 Going on 30” and “500 Days of Summer,” both winning four states. “Wedding Crashers” was close, winning in three states, followed by “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” in two states.
Some of the less common favorites include Delaware’s pick, “Amelie,” Indiana’s favorite, “Chocolat,” and Hawaii’s choice, “Under the Tuscan Sun.”
Even though “40-Year-Old Virgin” dominated most states, there’s no doubt that America has other favorites as well. “Bridesmaids” was only 2.55% behind in overall votes. Additionally, even though “13 Going on 30” won in the state-by-state votes, “Wedding Crashers” actually had more votes overall. In a similar sense, “Love Actually” was only voted most popular in Hawaii, yet it was voted by 4.95% of Americans overall.
Note: The “Other” category in this study is the compilation of all movies that did not receive greater than 1.1% worth of votes.
In addition to movie popularity by state, our team wondered if everyone’s favorite romantic comedy differed by age group. We found these results by breaking down top voted rom-coms by the surveyors’ birth decade.
With “40-Year-Old Virgin” coming out in 2005, it’s no surprise that it won over those that were 35 years old and younger at the time. Additionally, “500 Days of Summer” didn’t come out until 2009, which explains why it’s the favorite among those born in the 2000s.
Regardless of your age or where you live, it’s safe to say that romantic comedies are loved all over the country, and a way that a lot of Americans spend time at home. These films help us take a step back and appreciate the important relationships in life, albeit in a lighthearted, care-free way.

Methodology
We surveyed 4,629 Americans, asking them to select their favorite romantic comedy from the Rotten Tomatoes’ List of Top 150 Romantic Comedies. We pulled all of the movies that were made during or after the year 2000. The survey respondents were not limited to specific demographics. We estimate the margin of error at 1%.
