Total Home Protection is a new home warranty company that’s ideal for homes with additional appliances/systems, like a second refrigerator or two garage doors.
Data and ratings accurate as of April 2019
House Method reviewed Total Home Protection to better understand the top players in the home warranty industry. This guide includes an overview of the company, its plans, and its pricing as well as a comparison of other popular home warranty companies and why customers recommend Total Home Protection.
Total Home Protection plans are approximately $43 to $52 per month. These prices are based on quotes our team of secret shoppers at House Method received.
To get an accurate quote, you’ll have to provide your zip code to an agent at Total Home Protection. Home warranty costs are always location-based.
Total Home Protection charges a $75 service fee, which is average for most home warranty companies. This means you’ll pay $75 out of pocket each time your claim is approved and a technician is sent to your home.
Because your home warranty plan should cover some of the cost—if not the full cost—to repair or replace a covered item, this $75 is still relatively affordable compared to a $1,500 repair bill.
Always read your contract or ask a sales representative whether you’ll be charged for repeat visits if a problem persists. Total Home Protection guarantees parts for 90 days and labor for 30 days.

Total Home Protection plans are one-year home warranties. Customers can pay the annual fee upfront and get one month of free coverage (13 months of coverage for the price of 12) or they can pay in monthly installments.
Like most home warranties, Total Home Protection plans are renewable year after year. However, pricing has been increasing every year since home warranties are in high demand.
For this reason, House Method recommends enrolling in a three- or five-year home warranty and paying the cost up front if you can afford it since this will lock in your price for the next three to five years.
The best part is that you can cancel at any time and receive a prorated refund less a small cancellation fee of $50. Total Home Protection’s cancellation fee is actually $25 less than most companies, which charge $75.
The following must be true in order to receive home repair service by Total Home Protection’s pre-approved technicians:
You can access a sample contract on Total Home Protection’s website under Terms and Conditions.
Total Home Protection accepts claims 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can call 800-545-0402 to submit a home warranty claim or you can file a claim online.
Total Home Protection’s customer service strives to address claims within two business days or four days on weekends and holidays. It is up to the company’s discretion whether your repair request is an emergency or not.
After approving your claim, Total Home Protection will schedule a mutually convenient appointment during normal business hours with an available service contractor.
Like the majority of home warranty providers, Total Home Protection will not reimburse customers who hire a professional outside of the company’s network of pre-approved technicians.

Total Home Protection has been in business for three years. It’s the youngest home warranty company that we’ve reviewed.
Note: The home warranty industry began only 47 years ago with the establishment of American Home Shield.
Although a young company, Total Home Protection has built rapport with many homeowners. There are 110 customer reviews on the Better Business Bureau’s website, which equal a three-star aggregate rating.
The BBB itself has given Total Home Protection a C- rating. One factor that could boost this rating is to become BBB-accredited, which Total Home Protection is not.
Consumers Advocate gives Total Home Protection 4 out of 5 stars while Best Company scored Total Home Protection 6.7 out of 10. Best Company attributes its score to competitive prices and 24/7 customer service, but limited availability. Consumers Advocate cites Total Home Protection as only covering 33 of 50 states, but we heard straight from the company that it covers 45 states.
House Method gives Total Home Protection 3 out of 5 stars. We love the comprehensive coverage that the company offers. Especially with its large list of optional add-ons, customers can really customize their home warranty plan to fit their needs and home’s specific assets.
We had a hard time overlooking Total Home Protection’s very average ratings across the board. Perhaps this is due to being such a young company.
Pricing is on the higher end of the spectrum compared to all of the home warranty plans we’ve evaluated. Unfortunately, these costs aren’t balanced by higher pay-out limits. Coverage is capped at $200–$500 per claim.
Here are some positive Total Home Protection reviews from the BBB’s website:

Two thumbs way up! My stove broke on Monday and by Tuesday, I was back to cooking dinner for my family. Deciding to invest in a home warranty was one of the smartest things [I’ve] ever [done].
Also, I want to personally thank Tom in customer service. He was amazing. He listened and assured me I had nothing to worry about. He assited me in selecting and scheduling a contractor. Tom did a great job because the contractor was so knowledgable and experienced. He fixed my stove in a jiffy. Money well spent. Thank you.

I had a great experience with Total Home Protection. After the hurricane, my home in Miami had issues and even though they don’t cover storm damage, they assisted me and covered my claim.
