Why we recommend professional lawn care services

DIY lawn care is time-consuming and expensive if you don’t have the right knowledge or tools.

The cost of DIY lawn care and maintenance adds up quickly as fertilization, aeration, and other lawn care applications require more equipment. You’ll need to purchase many of these items:

  • Trimmers
  • Digging tools
  • Grading tools
  • Measuring tools
  • Marking tools
  • Grass seed
  • Fertilizer
  • Herbicides and pesticides

The benefit of using a professional lawn care service is that you can treat your lawn as much as you need to without having to buy the equipment, fertilizer, or pesticides. These are all included in the cost of your service plan.

In addition to the cost, you could potentially run into problems with dangerous chemicals that should be handled by an experienced professional. Not only can you cause damage to yourself, a child, or a pet, but you might also make a mistake that could damage your lawn.

The benefits of a beautiful lawn

A professional can help you achieve a robust and healthy lawn that will enhance your home and your environment.

What can a healthy and professionally maintained lawn do for you?

  • Lawns can contribute to home security by creating high visibility zones against intruders as well as open space that reduces fire hazards.
  • A healthy lawn improves air quality, and properly maintained grass can improve water quality or conserve water altogether.
  • A beautiful lawn can increase your property value by more than 12%.
  • Strong, healthy grass provides your children and pets a place to safely play outside. A nice yard is also a place to entertain guests or neighbors.
  • Professional lawn care increases your lawn’s ability to withstand extreme weather and troublesome diseases.

Houston lawn care tips throughout the seasons

Though Houston is situated in a warmer climate, this doesn’t mean that you should care for your lawn in summer and spring the same way you would in winter or fall.

The Woodland Township, a residential area close to the Houston metro area, offers these season tips:

Spring
  • Apply and evenly rake compost.
  • Mow only 1/3 of the leaf blade.
  • Fertilize once in mid-April.
  • Add sandy topsoil to low places in the lawn.
Summer
  • Maintain St. Augustine grass between 3 and 3 ½ inches.
  • Irrigate deeply but infrequently.
  • Watch for chinch bugs near pavement.
Fall
  • Fertilize once in mid-October if necessary.
  • Avoid irrigation in the evening.
  • Apply compost if you didn’t do so in spring.
  • Turn off irrigation systems by November.
Winter
  • Irrigate only if there is little or no rainfall.
  • Rake or mow leaves.

Warm-season grasses

In Houston—and most of Texas—you’re likely to find Bermuda and St. Augustine grasses.

Warm-season grasses, such as Bahia, Bermuda, Centipede, St. Augustine, and Zoysia are commonly found in the Southern region of America where temperatures range between 80° F and 95° F.

The most common—Bermuda, St. Augustine, and Zoysia—have the following traits:

  • Bermuda—Bermuda grass grows quickly and tolerates drought and heat extremely well. It turns brown during winter dormancy.
  • St. Augustine—This type of grass is great for tropical climates, so it works well in humidity near the Gulf Coast. Though it will hold its color in the winter months, it needs more watering than Bermuda or Zoysia.
  • Zoysia—Zoysia grass can withstand drought and heat, requiring very little maintenance compared to other warm-season grasses.

Houston weather and common lawn problems

Whether you’re in the middle of a drought or preparing for a hurricane, Houston’s weather patterns are not easy on your grass. You’ll encounter several common problems when performing lawn care in Houston.

Drought

Prolonged periods of drought can destroy even the most drought-tolerant grasses. To prevent this from happening, you should water your lawn properly and efficiently.

  • Water your grass in the mornings to avoid evaporation by midday, and spread your grass trimmings (grasscycling) across the lawn to act as a fertilizer and help retain soil moisture.
  • Apply an inch of water when watering your lawn so that water can be absorbed up to six inches in the soil.

Flooding

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Houston’s location puts it in the path of tropical storms and hurricanes that can create devastating floods. These floods can suffocate your lawn, especially if the water is contaminated with debris.

Here’s how you can reduce damage and recover from flooding:

  • Sandbag high-risk areas of your lawn before a hurricane or tropical storm to prevent flooding and silt buildup.
  • Remove debris and silt from the area as soon as possible to reduce harm to your grass from smothering.
  • Aerate your turf to increase internal drainage and oxygen exchange in the soil.
  • Avoid perennial ryegrass that does not respond well to flooding. Stick to your native grasses and plants.

If your lawn is destroyed beyond repair, you may require a full renovation.

Fungal diseases

In Texas, fungal diseases like take-all and brown patch commonly affect Bermuda, St. Augustine, and Zoysia grasses. Fungal diseases can rot your lawn and turn your grass yellow and brown.

Fungal diseases are caused by excess water and moisture. Make sure your lawn has good drainage, and avoid overfertilizing or overwatering your grass.

Mosquitoes

With moisture comes mosquitoes. Flooding, standing water, and Houston’s climate make your lawn a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Mosquito eggs can hatch within days after heavy rain. Stop the cycle by removing standing water, filling in low areas of your lawn and keeping your drains clear.
