Plans don’t cover appliances

HomeServe USA plans, coverage, and cost

HomeServe has 17 plans, with the cheapest one costing just $5 a month. It’s worth noting that most companies have two to four home warranty plans that cover a combination of home appliances and systems, but HomeServe covers only systems.

Here’s a breakdown of HomeServe plans and associated pricing (the following prices are based on a 27713 zip code):

Plumbing plans

  1. Exterior water service line coverage ($7.95)—A water service line warranty can protect against  damage to your main water line from age, corrosion, or ground shifting.
  2. Exterior sewer/septic line coverage ($12.98)—This plan protects your home’s sewer and septic line in the event of clogs or breakage due to invasive tree roots or shifting soil.
  3. Interior plumbing and drainage system coverage ($18.99)—If you want to cover your main plumbing and drainage system, this plan may be a great option.

Electrical plans

  1. Interior electrical line coverage ($11.99)—Protect your home against power failures or faulty electrical components with this HomeServe plan.
  2. Exterior electrical line coverage ($5.79)—If your home’s exterior electrical components short circuit without warning, you could be left without power. Prevent this from happening with an exterior electrical plan.

Heating and cooling plans

  1. Cooling system coverage ($12.99)—With this plan, you’ll receive coverage for your air conditioning system and avoid paying expensive out-of-pocket costs for repairs.
  2. Heating coverage ($12.99)—This plan protects your heating system.
  3. Water heater repair ($6.99)—Ensure that you have hot water flowing throughout your home at all times with this home protection plan.
  4. Water heater repair and replacement plan ($8.99)—If you want extra protection on your water heater, this plan covers both repairs and replacements.
  5. Gas line coverage ($4.99)—Your home’s gas line may experience leaks due to aging pipes, valves, and fittings. Protect against these repairs with a gas line coverage plan.

Combination plans

  1. Exterior pipe plan ($12.79)—This warranty plan provides protection for your water service line and sewer and septic lines.
  2. Heating and cooling plan ($15.99)—If you want coverage for both your heating and cooling systems, this plan will help offset the cost of repairs to both systems.
  3. Home comfort plan ($23.99)—This is one of the more comprehensive HomeServe plans, covering your heating and cooling systems, gas line, and water heater.
  4. Complete plumbing plan ($33.59)—Perfect for all of your plumbing repairs, this plan covers your sewer and septic line, water service line, interior plumbing and drainage system, gas line, and water heater repair and replacement.
  5. Interior protection plan ($44.79)—This plan covers your interior plumbing and drainage system, interior electric line, heating and cooling systems, gas line, and water heater system.
  6. Home plumbing and drainage coverage ($21.98)—This plan covers your sewer line, septic line, and interior plumbing and drainage system.
  7. Premium home protection plan ($55.99)—This is the most comprehensive plan out of all the plans that HomeServe offers. It covers your sewer and septic line, water service line, interior plumbing and drainage system, exterior and interior electrical, heating and cooling systems, gas line, and water heater repair and replacement.

Unlike all home warranties we’ve reviewed, which charge an average service fee of $75 per claim, HomeServe USA customers do not pay a deductible.

Details for top HomeServe systems and appliances

Our team at House Method wanted to understand what customers value most when it came to home warranty coverage, so we surveyed 1,000 homeowners and asked them which items in their home were most valuable to them.

Once the results were in, we concluded that the top six systems and appliances people care about are the electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, refrigerator, washer/dryer, and oven/stove/range.

Here’s what that coverage looks like under a HomeServe home warranty plan.

Air conditioning

The following air conditioning components are covered under HomeServe: Air ducts, air conditioner coils, registers, grills, asbestos coverings, balancing of systems, wiring and parts, compressors, condenser casings, condenser coils, and thermostats.

Electrical

Your electrical system is covered under Interior Electrical Line coverage, Exterior Electrical Line coverage, and the Premium Home Protection plan. HomeServe will cover parts that have broken down due to normal wear and tear.

Plumbing

There are several different plumbing plans that offer customers protection. Depending on the plan you choose, the following items may or may not be covered: exterior water service line, exterior sewer/septic line, interior plumbing and drainage, water heater, and gas lines.

Since HomeServe doesn’t cover any appliances, there are no coverage details for the refrigerator, washer and dryer, and oven, stove, and range.

Coverage length

HomeServe USA customers must wait for 30 days for coverage to actually begin. Once your contract goes into effect, coverage lasts for 11 months.

Coverage limits

HomeServe will cover the repair and replacement costs of covered items that break due to normal wear and tear. You’ll have to refer to the terms and conditions of your particular plans to find out what’s exactly covered and what isn’t, in addition to any coverage caps on items.

HomeServe’s payout limit of $10,000 per term is far more generous than other home warranty companies; however, utility line repair and replacement costs are also much more expensive than a broken dishwasher.

Our take

In our opinion, if you want comprehensive coverage for your home systems and appliances, we recommend going with another home warranty company like Choice Home Warranty or American Home Shield. However, if you’re on a budget and want coverage for specific systems, HomeServe is a great choice.

HomeServe is one of the few home warranty companies that offers nationwide coverage and it checks a lot of our boxes regarding cost, trustworthiness, and customer service. For example, plans range between $5–$56, the company has an A+ rating from the BBB and has been in business for over 15 years, and it provides 24/7 claims service in addition to emergency service.

One drawback to HomeServe is that it doesn’t provide coverage for appliances, nor does it allow for any add-ons to plans. However, its plans are so specific that they basically function as add-on coverage.

Again, we highly recommend HomeServe if you’re looking for system coverage or you’re on a budget. For appliance coverage, we encourage you to check out other home warranty providers.

HomeServe USA reviews

Overall, HomeServe has one of the highest Better Business Bureau (BBB) customer ratings compared to the other home warranty providers we’ve reviewed. They have an A+ rating and a 3.1 star rating based on an average of 300 customer reviews. Additionally, the number of complaints against the company is much lower than that of other warranty companies in the business.

Here are a few HomeServe BBB reviews from current customers:

Theonya R. on January 10, 2020, said:

Jury is still out for me with this business… Dealing with the customer service department was challenging, to say the least. Specifically frustrating watching the communication with the company, the vendor who was doing the work, and me as a customer.

Jim T. on January 9, 2020, said:

We had a leak in our water main from right behind the shutoff valve on the street. After the county came out and looked at it, due to its location, it was our responsibility. We contacted HomeServe and it seemed that the earliest they could get someone to our house would be Tuesday (this was late Friday afternoon). Well, we still had water so that was fine. Tuesday came; rainy Tuesday but the two gentlemen showed up. They checked out the problem and repaired it in 2–3 hours. We haven’t heard from them until now, but I can say nothing but good things about the job they did. Glad we had the insurance policy! Many thanks to HomeServe!

Marci on January 9, 2020, said:

My experience with the plumbing crew was great. I had two separate leaks on my side of the water meter a few months apart. The last one required tunneling under a patio to replace pipe to the house. The work, professionalism, and customer focus were exceptional. I’m a big fan.

Eleanor on October 7, 2019, said:

I have had an insurance policy with HomeServe for many years. On Saturday, the water pipe to our house broke and the water had to be turned off at the curb. I am home with a sick husband on home hospice care and a house guest and this is the third day I have had no water to shower, do dishes, laundry, [or] flush toilets. HomeServe promised a plumber on Saturday, yesterday, and today. Plumbers have not shown up and I have called HomeServe about 10 times. Their service merits no stars.

Final thoughts

Our team at House Method gives HomeServe 3.98 out of 5 stars. It stands out with its A+ rating from the BBB, its international presence, 17 plan options priced within an affordable range, a one-year repair guarantee, and a zero-dollar deductible.

So, why isn’t it 5 stars? Well, HomeServe doesn’t cover any appliances like every other home warranty company does.

Customers are also limited to about two service calls per term whereas other home warranty companies allow customers to submit an unlimited number of claims.

HomeServe USA is a good choice for you if…

  • you’re worried about your main utility lines.
  • your local utility company does not offer insurance.
  • your appliances are protected under a manufacturer warranty.
  • you’re on a budget and want to cover specific home systems.

HomeServe USA may not be for you if…

  • you want more coverage for systems and appliances.
  • you want to be able to choose your own technician.
