Overall score: 9.3/10

The value prop

With 75% more brush bar power than the Dyson V6, the Dyson V7 Motorhead is a powerful 2-in-1 stick vacuum that can also be transformed into a handheld. If you’re looking for extended run time, exceptional suction, and easy maneuverability, the Dyson Motorhead is a top choice.

Pros
  • It comes with up to 30 minutes of fade-free power in Powerful mode and up to 20 minutes with the motorized cleaner head.
  • It’s lightweight and cordless, allowing you to easily carry it throughout your house and transport it anywhere you go.
  • It features no-touch dirt emptying, providing a more hygienic experience.
Cons
  • You have to hold the trigger while vacuuming.
  • It may struggle with large debris on hard floors.

Dyson V7 design

The Dyson V7 Motorhead is a two-in-one vacuum, engineered to clean even the most isolated areas like under your car seats and behind furniture. Its cordless design lets you weave the vacuum in between furniture without knocking over plants or getting stuck on sharp corners. It also features a new dust bin design with a release tab that sits on top of the main unit, allowing users to simply pull up on the tab whenever they need to release the contents of the canister.

The only drawbacks we found with the design were that the handstick didn’t stand on its own and we had to hold down the trigger while vacuuming. Another minor design drawback is the small dust cup—because of its small size, you may have to empty the dust cup on a more regular basis. If you’re looking for a Dyson stick vacuum with a larger dust bin, we recommend checking out the Dyson V10.

Some other important design features of the Dyson V7 include:

  • The Dyson digital motor V7—Engineered for powerful suction on carpets and hard floors, this motor allows the Dyson V7 to tackle any mess put in front of it.
  • 2 Tier Radial cyclones—With 15 small cyclones in its powerhouse, this Dyson cordless vacuum is able to create strong centrifugal forces that capture microscopic dirt.

Vacuum assembly

We’ve found Dyson stick vacuums to be exceedingly easy to assemble—and the Dyson V7 Motorhead is no exception. Aside from the additional attachments, the vacuum comes in three parts: the head, the wand, and the vacuum handpiece. Assembly can be accomplished in two simple steps.

  1. Insert the head of the vacuum into the end of the wand opposite the red button.
  2. Connect the handpiece to the other end of the wand and make sure it clicks into place.

How the Dyson V7 cleans

Unlike large heavyweight canister vacuums, you’re not likely to break a sweat when running this stick vacuum over your carpets and hardwoods. You know that five-pound weight you scoff at in the gym? That’s pretty much equivalent to how much the Dyson V7 Motorhead weighs. Not only is this vacuum incredibly light, but it glides easily over high- and low-pile carpet while capturing the finest dirt particles on both power settings. Switch between MAX mode for up to six minutes of high power and Powerful mode for longer, day-to-day cleaning.

The Dyson V7 Motorhead also has 75% more brush bar power than its wireless predecessor, the Dyson V6. Powered by a Dyson digital motor V7 and 15 cyclones, it’s able to suck up all types of debris from your floors.

As with most Dysons, cleaning out the dust canister is a cinch. Simply detach the canister from the stick (if you’re not in handheld mode) and press the red button to release the contents from the bottom of the bin.

What to note about the Dyson V7

Like most cordless vacuums, the charging time is long and the battery life is limited. So, make sure to plug the vacuum in before heading out the door or going to bed. By doing this, you won’t have to stop to charge your vacuum during cleaning.

Length 49 inches

Accessories included with the Dyson V7

The Dyson V7 Motorhead comes with a combination tool, a crevice tool, a docking station, and a charger. It also features a long cleaning wand that makes it possible to reach drapes and dusty ceiling corners. All of the tools snap on and off the main handheld unit with intuitive ease.

Combination tool

The combination tool, built with a wider flat-head apparatus and adjustable brush, is ideal for cleaning sensitive areas like laptop keyboards and window blinds.

Crevice tool

The crevice tool is a long, narrow extension wand with a flat tip that works well to clean narrow areas like between couch cushions or behind a bookcase.

Docking station

The dock is an unobtrusive wall piece that can be mounted anywhere for easy storing and charging. It not only stores and charges the vacuum, but it also efficiently manages the modular tools.

Dyson V7 Motorhead vs. Dyson V7 Absolute vs. Dyson V7 Animal vs. Dyson V7 HEPA

Dyson offers four versions of the Dyson V7: the Motorhead, the Absolute, the Animal, and the HEPA. All four models function virtually the same—the main difference is the accessories included with each one. If you want a Dyson V7 stick with multiple accessories and cleaning heads, we recommend going with the Dyson V7 Absolute or the Dyson V7 Animal.

Cleaning tests

We performed three different tests that measured suction power, maneuverability, and mobility on hard floors, low-pile carpet, and high-pile carpet. For our suction tests, we used Cheerios, kitty litter, coffee grounds, and pet hair.

Cleaning score: 9/10

Test 1—Suction test on hard floors

Aside from the Cheerios, which the vacuum pushed forward, the Dyson V7 did very well on hard floors. The high-powered suction effortlessly picked up the coffee grounds and pet hair within the first pass. Picking up the kitty litter took a few more passes, but we discovered that MAX Power is the way to go when it comes to capturing coarse materials.

Test 2—Suction test on high-pile carpet

The Dyson V7 Motorhead passed our high-pile carpet test with flying colors. It picked up Cheerios, kitty litter, and pet hair in two passes or less. Though the coffee grounds weren’t difficult to remove, we ended up going over them a few times to ensure the entire mess was removed.

Test 3—Suction test on low-pile carpet

During our coffee grounds test on low-pile carpet, many of the vacuums we tested left coffee stains—fortunately, this was not the case for the Dyson V7 Motorhead. The Motorhead was able to fully remove the coffee grounds in fewer than four passes. And just like on the high-pile carpet, the Dyson picked up the Cheerios, kitty litter, and pet hair without hesitation.

Maneuverability

The sleek, wireless design of the Dyson V7 allowed us to clean under coffee tables and around chairs with ease. It was our go-to vacuum for cleaning up messes that other vacuums couldn’t quite reach. In handheld mode, the maneuverability becomes much easier. With a lighter construction, this Dyson vacuum can go wherever you go.

Usability

There’s not too much to say about the Dyson V7 Motorhead’s mobility other than it’s extremely lightweight and easy to use on both hard and carpeted surfaces. It never got stuck on either surface. Additionally, switching between handheld mode and stick mode is incredibly easy, and swapping between cleaning tools is just as simple.

Noise

Quieter than the average vacuum which measures between 78 and 80 decibels, the Dyson V7 Motorhead measured 72.6 dB (slightly louder than your shower) when used on the lower setting.

Dyson V7 maintenance

To ensure your Dyson V7 works to the best of its ability, be sure to address these three elements:

  1. Wash the central filter once a month—Users should wash this lifetime filter at least once a month with cold water. Allow it to dry for 24 hours before inserting it back into the vacuum.
  2. Wash the HEPA filter once a month—If your Dyson V7 comes with a HEPA filter, it should be washed once a month with cold water. Just like the central filter, allow it to dry for 24 hours before inserting it back into the vacuum.
  3. Monitor the battery—The battery won’t need to be replaced unless it dies.

Is the Dyson V7 a good value?

It’s no wonder the consumer ratings are so high—the Dyson V7 Motorhead is a total steal! Its high performance, ease of use, and versatility make this a common one-click buy, and though the small dust bin and short battery life mean you can’t perform longer maintenance tasks, it’s still a great option for quick pick-ups and daily spot cleaning.

The only reason this might not be a great fit for you is if you have large areas to clean and spend more than 30 minutes vacuuming. If the battery life worries you, you may want to check out the Dyson V10 (it has a battery life of 60 minutes) or a Dyson corded upright (we recommend the Dyson Small Ball as an alternative). Other than that, we’re totally sold on the Dyson V7 Motorhead.

Who should buy the Dyson V7 Motorhead?

We recommend the Dyson V7 if you’re looking for the following:

  • A 2-in-1 vacuum—If you want to clean your floors and want the option to clean out your vehicle and other hard-to-reach spaces, the Dyson V7 might be the best vacuum for you. All of the tools that come with this Dyson (with the exception of the floor heads) work with both the stick and handheld version.
  • An extended run time—With 30 minutes of run time on Powerful mode, the Dyson can provide entire-home cleaning.
  • A lightweight vacuum—If you hate how tired your hand gets from holding a heavy vacuum, you’ll find the Dyson V7 to be a great match. Weighing less than six pounds, this vacuum is easy to carry during your cleaning job.

Customer reviews

“This is my first Dyson vacuum and it has so far lived up to the hype. Taking it out of the box, it looks so small and you can’t help but think it’s no way more powerful then a corded vacuum. But it is! It picks up the same, if not better, then your standard cord vacuum. The real selling point for me is the lightweight aspect. This can easily be taken up and down the stairs. As someone who has a shedding-like-crazy Corgi, a cat, and a toddler, I vacuum everyday. I am able to do my downstairs and upstairs on one charge. I also love the way this moves from carpet to hardwood floor with ease and works great on both.

The only thing that might be a negative thing is that you must keep your finger on the power button while vacuuming (a trigger-type button). This is great for saving battery life when moving from space to space, but if vacuuming for extended periods, one’s hands could cramp., especially those who have issues already. I highly recommend this vacuum and it is worth the extra money for sure since it is much better then other vacuums out there. — Amazon review

Ok, this vacuum is by far one of the best buys I have ever purchased. I have neck and back issues and needed a lightweight vacuum. Well, I can’t understand how quiet [this vacuum] is and how it works so fantastic. I can run it and put it in and out of the charging cradle with one hand. I just love how everything is designed—you can tell a lot of thought went into each and every aspect of it. It goes under objects with ease and picks up along edges great. A lot of the reviews said it would need to be emptied a lot at first, and yes it did. It pulled the dirt up so much more than my previous sweeper that I was embarrassed to think my floors were that dirty. I truly am sold on this vacuum. I was skeptical, but boy did it show me. Thank you, Dyson, for making my life easier.” — Amazon review
