Overall score: 9.22/10

The value prop

Engineered to clean hard and carpeted surfaces, this Dyson ball vacuum delivers unmatched suctioning abilities and can target any type of mess—big or small. If you’re looking for a versatile, upright vacuum that you can easily transport during your cleaning job, the Dyson Small Ball might be your perfect match.

Pros
  • It’s compact and has a retractable handle for easy storage.
  • A 2-Tier Radial cyclone system delivers full-size vacuum performance.
  • It’s incredibly lightweight and easy to carry around your home and up and down stairs.
Cons
  • It has a smaller dust canister than other Dyson upright vacuums.
  • It only comes with two accessories: a stair tool and a combination tool.

Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor design

Small but mighty, the Small Ball is a lightweight vacuum designed to clean any surface (and substance) you may come across. Built with Dyson Ball technology, this small vacuum cleaner is easy to maneuver around furniture. It can also be more efficiently stored than its big brother, the Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2—in fact, it takes up to 50% less storage space than a full-size Dyson Ball vacuum. If you’re looking for a lightweight upright vacuum for all-around home cleaning, this vacuum is a viable option.

Some other important design elements of the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor include:

  • An advanced self-adjusting cleaner head—This feature allows the cleaner head to automatically adjust to the type of floor you’re vacuuming on and seals in suction. A powerful direct drive motor pushes cleaning bristles deep into carpets for maximum agitation, giving them a more in-depth clean.
  • A re-engineered wand—Combined with a longer cable, the re-engineered wand provides this Dyson Ball vacuum with a total cleaning reach of 42 feet, longer than previous Dyson upright models.
  • A retractable handle—The vacuum’s handle raises and retracts, which is a great feature to have if you’re short on storage space. To lower the handle, simply press the large, red button found on the stick portion of the vacuum (right above the dust canister).

Vacuum assembly

Assembling this small vacuum cleaner is simple and can be completed by following these steps.

  1. Attach the dust canister to the body of the vacuum.
  2. With the vacuum lying on its back, slide the vacuum head into the vacuum until it clicks into place.
  3. Position the vacuum upright to attach the hose to the handle/wand.
  4. Press down on the red half-circle button and push the handle/wand into place.
  5. Slide the tool holder onto the back of the vacuum just above the ball. Press firmly to snap the holder into place.

How the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor cleans

Built with 2 Tier Radial cyclones and carbon fiber filaments, the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor can remove even the finest particles from hard floors and carpets. During our testing, it excelled on hard floors, removing Cheerios, coffee grounds, and pet hair in a single pass. This small vacuum also cleans up messes with ease on low-pile and high-pile carpet. Compared to the Dyson DC50 Animal Compact, the Small Ball is considerably more powerful, has a longer reach, and is simple to use. One of our favorite features of the Small Ball is its ability to seamlessly transition from hard to carpeted surfaces while still providing the same outstanding suction.

What to note about the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor

The Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor is the rebranded version of the DC50 Animal upright vacuum. Though the Small Ball is an upright, it’s a compact model so it’s slightly smaller than standard Dyson upright vacuums. Its small design is terrific for storing, but its smaller size means that the vacuum has a smaller dust canister, which likely means more trips to your trash can.

Accessories included with the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor

The Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor comes with a combination tool and a stair tool. When ordering through Dyson’s direct site, you can choose three additional tools to receive for free when you enroll in auto registration.

Combination tool

This tool has a brush on the end and is excellent for cleaning narrow areas like along the trim of a wall or under a low couch. The combination tool can be adjusted to hold a brush head which can clean smaller, dusty surfaces like TV stands and window sills.

Stair tool

The stair tool, unsurprisingly, is designed to clean stairs. We found that it works well on hard and carpeted stairs and does a great job at removing pet hair.

Note: The Small Ball Multi Floor vacuum also features an extendable wand that can be used as an extension for the attachment tools. To use this piece, you’ll need to attach the opposite end of the wand (where the handle is) to the hose.

Cleaning tests

We performed three different tests that measured suction power, maneuverability, and mobility on hard floors, low-pile carpet, and high-pile carpet. For our suction tests, we used Cheerios, kitty litter, coffee grounds, and pet hair.

Cleaning score: 9.58/10

Test 1—Suction test on hard floors

The 2 Tier Radial Cyclones and carbon fiber filaments that comprise this Dyson’s cleaning system made vacuuming hard floors a walk in the park. The Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor picked up our messes with ease, though we did have to go over the cereal on the backstroke since the vacuum head pushed the cereal forward on the initial push. Compared to other upright vacuums, the Small Ball did exceptionally well at removing small dirt particles from hard floors.

Test 2—Suction test on high-pile carpet

Based on how well the vacuum cleaner did on hard floors, we expected it to perform just as well on carpet—and it did not disappoint. The Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor suctioned the Cheerios, kitty litter, coffee grounds, and pet hair from the high-pile carpet in the first pass with little resistance. The intense suction power combined with easy mobility makes this vacuum ideal for pet owners who struggle with embedded pet hair in their high-pile carpets.

Test 3—Suction test on low-pile carpet

With the exception of the coffee grounds, which left a slight stain on the low-pile carpet after being vacuumed over, the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor proved successful at removing the other messes. It captured the cereal, kitty litter, and pet hair from the low-pile carpet without hesitation—something many of the other Dyson vacuums we tested struggled to do.

Maneuverability

Designed with Dyson Ball technology, the Small Ball effortlessly moves around stationary objects, giving you a more controlled clean. When we tested it around a couch corner and under a two-foot coffee table, it had no problem maneuvering around each object.

Usability

For a one-setting, multi-surface upright vacuum, the mobility of this vacuum cleaner was impressively smooth. Moving across high-pile carpet took a bit more effort but by no means required a strong wrist. Its compact size also allows users to easily carry the entire vacuum throughout the house without hesitation.

Noise

Measuring at 75.5 decibels, the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor tested the quietest of our upright vacuum cleaners. Though it’s quiet in comparison to other uprights, the Small Ball isn’t the quietest vacuum out there. If you’re looking to get your vacuuming done while your little ones rest, we recommend checking out the Miele Compact C1 canister vacuum.

Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor maintenance

The Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor has a clear dust bin, allowing you to see when it requires emptying. Though the contents can be emptied quickly, you may need to use your hands to remove built-up dust and hair if you let the canister fill beyond the maximum level. Note: exceeding the max limit on the canister can impede vacuum performance.

Filtration

Certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor provides whole-machine HEPA filtration that ensures allergens and other microscopic particles are trapped inside the machine and aren’t expelled back into the home. The Dyson Small Ball comes with two washable filters that should be washed monthly for optimal filtration. Designed to last the life of the vacuum, these filters help remove debris from your indoor air while also protecting the vacuum’s motor.

Is the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor a good value?

The Dyson Small Ball is increasing in popularity—and with good reason. Its performance is nearly unmatched and aside from the small dust canister, this compact vacuum can keep up with full-size upright vacuum cleaners while saving you up to 50% of storage space. Your search for a convenient, multi-surface vacuum ends here with the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor.

Who should buy the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor?

We recommend the Small Ball if you’re looking for the following:

  • A powerful vacuum that can clean multiple flooring types—Offering unparalleled cleaning performance with its 2 Tier Radial Cyclonic System, this Dyson Ball vacuum ensures that maximum suction is achieved thanks to its self-adjusting vacuum cleaner head. The brush head features carbon fiber filaments that remove fine dust from floors without damaging the surface. The brushroll can also be turned off for use on delicate surfaces like drapes or blinds.
  • A compact vacuum that’s light and easy to carry—Weighing just 12.5 pounds, it’s the ideal upright vacuum for carrying up and down stairs and transporting throughout a multi-level home.
  • Easy maneuverability—Whereas most upright vacuums ride on wheels, this small vacuum rides on a stable ball that allows for improved stability and easy turning around furniture and corners.

Customer reviews

Bought this for my mother and she LOVES it. Compared to her very old canister vacuum, this has good suction and pickup, it is very lightweight, and it turns and handles very easily, all of which are very important factors for a petite lady. Mom is very happy, so I’m happy… 5 stars easy!” — Amazon review

“The vacuum is great overall. This is our third Dyson product, so most of the performance is as expected based on past purchases. Pros: Lightweight and the perfect size for an apartment with very few closets. Carpet suction is exceptional. We were shocked at the amount of dust and whatever else came up on the first cleaning. Cons: The attachments aren’t awesome. They’re situated oddly on side nubs near the base and fall off when I’m vacuuming.” — Amazon review
