Overall score: 9.4/10

The value prop

The Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 is one of the most powerful Dyson upright vacuums available. With Radial Root Cyclone technology that captures microscopic dust, a self-adjusting cleaner head to seal in suction across all floors, HEPA filtration for allergy sufferers, and ball technology for easy maneuverability, this Dyson vacuum is a top choice for entire-home cleaning.

  • It cleans exceptionally well on bare surfaces and low-pile carpet.
  • It features no-touch emptying, allowing you to empty debris without touching the contents of the dust bin.
  • It’s one of the lighter Dyson uprights available.
  • Though it’s easy to maneuver, its Ball design makes it hard to get under low-set furniture.
  • It doesn’t come with specific tools to target pet hair and other pet debris.

Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 design

The Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 has a sleek, modern, honey-colored design. It’s one of the lighter uprights we tested, weighing 15.6 pounds, but if you have trouble holding heavy objects for an extended period, we recommend going for a lighter Dyson upright like the Dyson Small Ball Multi Floor. Some other important design features of the Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 include:

  • An on/off brushroll setting—This can be adjusted via an easily accessible button just below the handle. It stops the brush from rotating when you’re using other tools or cleaning bare floors. It also prevents you from scattering dirt on bare floors and reduces the risk of injury if the vacuum tips over during use.
  • A self-adjusting cleaner head—If you have carpets and hard floors across your floors, this design feature will really help during a cleaning job. The bottom of the head has a plate that adjusts to the type of flooring you’re vacuuming on, limiting suction loss around the cleaner head and resulting in more power to target your mess.
  • A clear bin—This feature allows you to see when the dust cup needs to be emptied.
  • A HEPA filter—A high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter provides the highest level of vacuum cleaner filtration, removing even the smallest particles from your floors. HEPA filters are great for people who suffer from asthma or other allergies.

Vacuum assembly

If you’re looking for a vacuum with easy assembly, the Dyson Multi Floor 2 is a perfect choice. With four clicks (and simple pictures to follow along in your owner’s manual), your vacuum will be ready to use in no time. It took our team less than two minutes to remove all of the pieces from the box and put the vacuum together.

How the Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 cleans

The Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 has Radial Root Cyclone technology that captures more microscopic dust and particles than most vacuums on the market. Combined with a motorized brush bar, the vacuum’s self-adjusting cleaner head automatically raises and lowers and seals in suction across all floors. In addition to the self-adjusting cleaner head, this Dyson has a long power cord, which means you’ll be able to clean large areas of your house without having to unplug your vacuum.

The Dyson Multi Floor also has a ball feature that provides great maneuverability and mobility, allowing the vacuum to turn on a dime and generate more precise movements around furniture and other obstacles. Its maneuverability is easily one of its best—and one of our favorite—features, clearly surpassing other Dyson vacuum maneuverability levels.

What to note about the Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2

When testing the Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2, we noticed that it made a lot of noise, clocking in at 81.3 decibels, which is just over the average vacuum noise level. Its weight and width also make it harder to carry than other vacuums. Another factor to note: the vacuum produced a slight mechanical odor during testing (this could be because it was a brand new product).

Cleaning tests

We performed three different tests that measured suction power, maneuverability, and mobility on hard floors, low-pile carpet, and high-pile carpet. For our suction tests, we used Cheerios, kitty litter, coffee grounds, and pet hair.

Cleaning score: 9.75/10

Test 1—Suction test on hard floors

The Dyson Multi Floor received a perfect score across all substances during the hard floor test. It sucked up Cheerios, kitty litter, coffee grounds, and pet hair with ease. For those who have tile or hardwoods, choosing this vacuum is a no-brainer.

Test 2—Suction test on high-pile carpet

On high-pile carpet, this vacuum took one forward pass to suck up the Cheerios and kitty litter and three passes to completely remove the coffee grounds and pet hair. Though it didn’t get a perfect score across all substances, it still performed extremely well. We also noted that the vacuum had a harder time moving on high-pile carpet than low-pile carpet.

Test 3—Suction test on low-pile carpet

On low-pile carpet, the Dyson Multi Floor took one forward pass to suck up the Cheerios, kitty litter, and pet hair. It took four passes to completely remove the coffee grounds. For vacuuming finer substances, we recommend using the combination tool or attached wand to remove all of the particles.

The Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 is one of the easiest upright vacuums to maneuver thanks to its ball technology. With a simple turn of the wrist, you’ll be able to turn the vacuum on a dime. We tested the vacuum’s maneuverability around a couch corner and under a one-foot-tall coffee table and concluded that the vacuum steers easily into difficult spaces and doesn’t have a problem getting around big obstacles. Note: though the ball mechanism allows for easy maneuverability, it could be a hindrance when trying to get under extremely low furniture.

During our usability test, we tested how easy it was for the vacuum to move back and forth on our three different floor types. On hard floors and low-pile carpet, the vacuum moved with ease and never got stuck. On high-pile carpet, the vacuum occasionally got stuck and struggled to pick up finer substances. Additionally, its considerable heft can make longer clean-up jobs pretty strenuous. This is important to note for those who may be regularly vacuuming larger areas like the living room or master bedroom, or for those who have multi-level homes and have to constantly go up and down stairs.

The Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 measured 81.3 decibels, which is comparable to what a normal piano practice sounds like. This noise level is slightly louder than the average vacuum noise level of 78–80 decibels.

Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 maintenance

With the Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2, there’s not much that needs to be done in terms of maintenance. One important maintenance item that should be kept up with is emptying the dust canister whenever it gets full. In just two steps, detach the canister from the vacuum, press down on the “one-click” button, and allow the contents to fall from the bottom of the container into the trash. This one-click dirt emptying allows you to empty the canister without touching any dirt, hair, or debris. You’ll have to close the bottom manually and reattach the unit to the vacuum once you’re done.

The Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 is certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and has whole-machine HEPA filtration that traps allergens, dust, and other particles. This is great for those who suffer from asthma, allergies, and other respiratory conditions.

Similar to the Dyson Ball Animal 2, the Dyson Ball Multi Floor 2 comes with two filters: a pre-motor filter and a post-motor filter. The pre-motor filter can be found in the center of the cyclones and is easy to remove. The post-motor filter is found inside the ball mechanism. Both filters are washable—a bonus for those looking to save money on replacement filter costs. Dyson recommends washing the filter with cold water every month.

Customer reviews

“We have never been more impressed with a vacuum. The amount of dirt we’ve been able to pick up is outstanding. I had just vacuumed a few days before this vacuum arrived. After running it over the same floors, we had to dump the canister at least two times! The easy turning is an added bonus. I’ve had issues with edge cleaning with other vacuums. You had to pull the debris away from the wall to get the vacuum to pick it up. Not with this unit…it picked up everything near the baseboards. It is very lightweight and has a very long cord. We couldn’t be more pleased with this purchase!” — Amazon review

“I could not be happier with this vacuum! I purchased this about three weeks ago. I also come from a family that has always used Oreck vacuums, but after reading many personal reviews whether it be on this site or through friends and family members, I decided to go with this product. I can’t tell you how happy I am! I consider myself an absolute clean freak, and after one initial sweep/vacuum of the family room rug, I could not believe how much it picked up! This vacuum is definitely 100% recommended! As a side note, I do have a dog who is short-haired, yet [the vacuum] picked up so much of his fur and I am now dancing in my kitchen because I am so extremely happy with this product! Side note—my number one concern with all vacuums is the weight of it… This vacuum is perfect for me to carry up and down the stairs without a concern (I weigh 120-ish). This is a definite yes if you are considering buying this product! Love it!”— Amazon review
