Customer Reviews

The great thing about steam mops is that there’s one out there that’ll surely fit your cleaning requirements. The problem is, given the mountain of options for steam mops nowadays, zeroing on the best model can be really difficult. Choosing the best steam mop requires in-depth research. And that’s just what our team does.

We’ve defined the top 5 steam mops that reign supreme for you.

Best Steam Mop Reviews Guide

Steam mops have been praised for their remarkably effective technique in removing the toughest of stains. But how can something be so effective if the primary factor for cleaning is good ol’ water?

Steam is actually water that turned into gas through the application of heat. Sounds simple, right? Here’s where the humble steam mop gets its superpower from: when water is boiled and pressurized inside a sealed space, it releases a forceful steam. That blast of powerful steam from the head’s nozzles is potent and helps loosen stains.

Steam mops sanitize the space being cleaned, too. The increased temperature and pressure enters the bacteria, making them more vulnerable and easier to kill. Sanitation means that the number of disease-causing germs are reduced, but not completely eliminated. That’s why you see claims like “steam mops kill 99.9% of germs.”

You’re probably wondering: Why can’t steam mops kill 100% of germs if it uses an extraordinary amount of force? That’s because it requires a higher temperature, pressure, and longer “cooking” time to kill all germs.

Only sterilization can kill 100% of germs. Autoclave is one example of steam sterilization used by hospitals to make sure that surgical equipment is completely germ-free.”

Factors to Consider

Flooring types: Some steam mops specialize in a specific type of floor finish. This can be an expensive purchase if you have different types of floor finishes in your home. Aside from that, switching from one steam mop to another defeats its purpose of shortening cleaning time. So, look for one that can clean multiple types of floors. Notice that we didn’t say all floor types. To be honest, we’re kind of wary about manufacturers that claim to do that. Steam mops, for one, work great in cleaning sealed hardwood floors. However, it can cause irreparable damage to unsealed ones.

Steam mops work best on the following common types of floors:

  • Sealed hardwood floors
  • Vinyl
  • Ceramic tile
  • Marble
  • Porcelain tile
  • Laminate

Usability: There are several points that need to be addressed when it comes to usability. Here are the major ones.

  • Ease of use: We praise steam mops that don’t stress out their users when it comes to figuring out how they’re supposed to work. This can be in the form of having simple-to-use buttons, easy instructions, or no-brainer set up. In other words, look for a steam mop that you can use as soon as you take it out of the box.
  • Maneuverability: To make your floors (and you) happy, its cornering ability should be top-notch. The swivel head should be flexible enough when you need to maneuver into those hard-to-reach spots.
  • Weight: Almost all steam mops are lightweight, but there are still some models that are lighter than others, making them easier to carry and push around. It won’t give you muscle fatigue and you can easily carry it if you need to work on each step of your stairs. However, stay away from those that are too light. A good steam mop needs to have a good weight in order for it to have a good contact with the floor.
  • Heat up time: 30 to 45 seconds is a good heating time. More than a minute is too long when it comes to this.
Best Steam Mop for Multiple Floor Types BISSELL POWERFRESH STEAM MOP

Outfitted with 3 steam modes (low, medium, and high steam) that’s superb in blasting the right force of steam to clean specific messes, and it also adjusts well to the steam requirement of different floor types–from linoleum to marble. It comes with a white microfiber pad that’s safe to use on floors that requires extra care, and a striped microfiber pad for scrubbing tougher stains.

Various steam strengths: Customizing the steam power based on the type of dirt/debris is a big plus. Flow rate is the measurement of a steam’s strength. The higher the flow rate (e.g. 110g/min), the better it is at griming off dirt. That’s perfect when you’re working with tough stains. But if you’re dealing with something as simple as removing dust, a low level of steam will be enough to thoroughly clean it. In addition, if the steam level is always high, the mop pad will get too soaked and cause streaking.

Water tank: Given its compact design, a steam mop’s water tank capacity cannot rival that of a heavy-duty steam cleaner’s. However, it should still be big enough to get the job done without the need for constant refilling.  Bissell PowerFresh Steam Mop’s 16-oz water tank, for example, has a sufficient cleaning cycle of 20 minutes or more–depending on how many passes are done and how dirty the area is. A transparent water tank that easily shows the water level is also helpful.

Price: This is almost always a big factor in every purchase. When it comes to steam mops, the priciest one is not necessarily the best of the bunch. But still, to avoid a buyer’s remorse, carefully check the benefits of the steam mop versus its cost.

Useful extras: It should come with extras that’ll make cleaning a breeze, even enjoyable. Scrubbers that lift off tough stains, scented discs that emit a fantastic aroma, self-release mop pads that eliminates the risk of burns, and cooling trays that will prevent damage to your floors are some of these. Many models also have an array of attachments that you can use in different areas of your home.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of buying a steam mop?

Steam mops:

  • Keep the floors bacteria-free and dirt-free
  • Prevent allergy attacks by neutralizing different allergens like animal dander and dust
  • Are environment-friendly and safe
  • Reduce cleaning time and effort
  • Help make old floors look great again
Do steam mops work?

Yes they do. They can thoroughly clean floors–and various areas of a home–without much effort. A steam mop will perform well once it’s been assembled according to manufacturer’s instructions and used with care.

Will steam mops damage hardwood floors?

No, as long as they’re used on sealed hardwood floors. Unsealed hardwood floors have crawl spots where moisture can easily seep through thereby causing damage (e.g. buckling, crowning, or cupping). Hardwood floors that are in constant contact with direct sunlight are susceptible to damage as well, so it’s best to do a spot test first before doing a thorough pass on these areas.

What are the types of floors that steam mops works best on?

Steam mops work best on the following common types of floors:

  • Sealed hardwoods
  • Vinyl
  • Ceramic tile
  • Marble
  • Porcelain tile
  • Laminate

You shouldn’t use a steam mop on polished floors and waxed floors. Doing so will reduce the lustrous finish of the aforementioned types of floors.
