American Standard warranty: What is it?

In a manufacturer’s warranty is between a manufacturer and the consumer. The manufacturer defines a term length and specifics on what’s covered, what’s not, and what they promise to the consumer.

Even if you buy a major appliance, piece of equipment, or product through a retailer or seller, and not the manufacturer, you still get a manufacturer’s warranty, which is also known as an appliance warranty.

Most manufacturer warranties only cover repairs and replacements of parts or products should they be or become defective because of the materials or the workmanship. Meaning, if the product itself isn’t working because of the way it was made, you can get it repaired or replaced at no extra cost. However, if the product stops working due to normal or wear and tear or because of an accident, it will not be covered under this type of warranty.

Many manufacturer warranties offer product registration, meaning you can register the product within a set timeframe and get extra information or benefits.

American Standard products and warranties

American Standard has a dozen different warranties for their products. They offer standard short-term warranties, as well as limited lifetime warranties, which means that only certain American Standard parts are covered for a lifetime and only under specific terms.

The residential products sold by American Standard include:

Here are some of the common American Standard warranties, many of which cover repairs and replacements on residential products if they become “defective in materials or workmanship under normal use and maintenance:”

  • General Product One-Year Warranty, which is also called the America, Inc. 1-year limited warranty
  • Shower Doors Warranty, a lifetime limited warranty
  • Walk-In Bath Limited Warranty Coverage, which includes, but is not limited to, a 15-year warranty on the bathtub, a 10-year warranty on the tub components, and a lifetime warranty on the door seal
  • Bath Furniture Limited Warranty, a 1-year warranty
  • Stainless Steel Sink Lifetime Warranty, a lifetime limited parts warranty
  • Limited Warranty for Cadet® PRO, Cadet®3, Concealed Trapway Cadet®3, Studio® Dual Flush, and H2Option™ Toilets, which includes a limited lifetime warranty on chinaware, a limited 5-year warranty on mechanical parts of the toilet, and a limited 1-year warranty on the toilet seat
  • Limited Warranty for Colony Toilets, which includes a limited lifetime warranty on chinaware, limited 2-year warranty on mechanical parts of the toilet, and limited 1-year warranty on the toilet seat

In addition to these warranties, American Standard also offers limited lifetime function and finish warranties for their residential faucets. Commercial faucets are only covered for a five-year term, though this is longer than Kohler’s one-year term for commercial faucets. They, too, offer a lifetime limited warranty on residential faucets.

Terms and conditions for each warranty will specify what is and isn’t covered, but here are some terms worth noting:

  • Not all parts are covered by the warranty, even if the product, itself, is under warranty.
  • The warranty becomes immediately void if you replace a broken part without a qualified professional.
  • These warranties do not cover “deterioration through normal wear and tear.”
  • Many of these warranties, regardless of being lifetime warranties, are not transferable, which means you must be the original purchaser and should have proof of purchase available.

Common American Standard repairs and costs

Repairing bath and kitchen appliances can be costly, especially if it’s not covered the American Standard warranty.

For example, a full remodel for a small bathroom costs $6,500 on average. Here’s how:

  • Installing a sink costs $100–$250 for materials, $300–$350 for labor costs associated, and $15–$95 for removal and disposal.
  • Resurfacing your bathtub costs $475–$600.
  • Installing new faucets costs $150– $250.
  • Installing a bathtub costs $400–$1,000 for materials, $450–$600 for labor costs associated, and between $50–$300 for removal and disposal.

Fixing a toilet costs an average of $217. More than 60% of Americans have two toilets in their home, and over 8% have four or more. For just one toilet, replacing a tank costs $50–$100, not including the cost of hiring a professional plumber ($45–$300). But this is just the average. Depending on the brand and the part, you could get stuck paying a lot more.

A VorMax Flapper assembly, for instance, costs over $30, a Fluidmaster 400A Universal Toilet Water Fill Valve costs over $25, and a Water Control L/Ventaway costs over $250 on the American Standard website.

Fixing a faucet costs an average of $245, depending on the brand. Here are some of the most popular brands and the average cost for a faucet:

  • Kohler faucet—$50–$2,000
  • Moen faucet—$50–$1,000
  • American Standard faucet—$50–$600
  • Pfister faucet—$25–$600

Of course, the labor, material, and repair can really differ, depending on the manufacturer, brand, and type of product or part. Costs add up and can really impact your savings, if you’re not prepared for them or if they aren’t covered under warranty.

Warranties for American Standard HVAC systems

If you own an American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning or Trane HVAC product (since they are part of the same parent company), then an HVAC warranty plan is included with the purchase.

For a Registered Limited Manufacturer’s Warranty, your heating and cooling product must be registered within 60 days of installation. If the product is not registered, then your warranty will revert back to the Base Limited Manufacturer’s Warranty.

Base limited warranty terms and registered limited warranty terms are outlined in your owner manual, but here’s the gist: HVAC products and parts that have been properly installed in residential homes will be repaired or replaced anywhere from one year to a lifetime if the product or part fails due to a manufacturing defect. If the part is not available, the company will find a suitable replacement or give you credit to be used on a suitable part.

Majority of AC unit parts are covered between five and ten years. Only the heat exchanger for particular brands come with a lifetime warranty. Most are covered for only 20 years.

For example, compressor and outdoor coil repairs on a single phase R22 outdoor unit are only covered for one year. However, compressor and coil repairs for a packaged air conditioner and packaged heat pump is covered for 20 years for some brands.

What’s not covered in either manufacturer warranty plan:

  • Shipping and handling costs of the replacement parts
  • Costs of service, including labor costs
  • Shipping, removal, and installations costs for a new product
  • Repairs or replacements on products that are in a different location than where they were originally installed
  • Repairs or replacements on products that were not properly installed or maintained or operated
  • Any repairs or replacements made without the manufacturer’s parts and without a licensed HVAC service provider that meets the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Repairs or replacements needed because of failures, defects, or damage caused by natural disasters, theft, etc.

Transferring your American Standard warranty

What if you sell your home and want your warranty to be transferred to the new owner? A Registered Limited Warranty Transfer Option is available, but there is a Registered Limited Warranty Transfer period. If your American Standard HVAC products were installed during either the 60-day product registration period or within 90 days following the sale of the home, then you can transfer the balance of your warranty.

This transfer costs $59 during the initial 60-day product registration period and $99 within 90 days following the sale of your home. This is different across states, so check with American Standard to be sure it’s available to you.

For American Standard HVAC warranty claims, you need proof of purchase, so if you’re not the original owner, make sure you get this information in advance of the transfer. It also helps to know your American Standard warranty number.

Product registration with American Standard

To register your product, you can make a profile on American Standard’s website and register your products there. Each product must be registered separately. Even if you don’t want the warranty coverage, registration keeps you updated on any recalls.

For product registration, you should be prepared to give the following information:

  • Model number
  • Serial number
  • Date of purchase
  • Personal information

If you make a claim later down the line, you should be able to provide proof of purchase, installation, and routine maintenance (save your receipts!).

American Standard extended warranties vs. home warranty plans

If you want to protect your products after American Standard warranty expires, you can purchase an extended warranty or a home warranty plan.

Most manufacturer warranties don’t offer lifetime coverage, which is why you can extend your coverage. Manufacturers or third-party dealers offer extended warranties, which typically cover repairs, replacements, parts, and labor.

A home warranty plan is not an extended warranty. Extended warranties must be purchased for each product and usually last a few years. Chances are, your appliance will outlast your warranty.

Here are typical lifespans of kitchen and bath products:

  • Kitchen faucets work for an average of 15 years.
  • Air conditioners last for an average of 15 years.
  • A sump pump lasts for an average of 7 years.
  • A whirlpool tub lasts for an average of 20–50 years.
  • A bathroom faucet lasts for an average of 15 to 20 years.
