Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:

International Van Lines (IVL) is my choice for the best full-service mover because of its unmatched range of services, move options, and excellent customer service. IVL has been awarded Best in Business by Inc. 500, Forbes, and Newsweek in 2021, 2022, and 2023, earning it a stellar reputation throughout the industry.

Get a free quote from International Van Lines.

These local movers offer competitive rates and make full-service moves more attainable for the average family. If you’re concerned about your budget, talk to an IVL representative about the company’s moving solutions so that you can meet your budget and your needs with a custom plan. While IVL works primarily as a broker, it has some of the best customer reviews in the industry. It consistently contracts moves out to reputable third-party movers while maintaining affordable rates, even for full-service moves.

One month of free storage with all moves
Excellent customer satisfaction ratings
Wide availability (50 states and 180 countries)
25% up-front deposit required
Brokers out many U.S. moves (service quality may vary)

International Van Lines offers flexible moving services for mixing and matching to curate your perfect moving package. Some of the most common services available in New Jersey are:

  • Packing supplies
  • Auto transportation
  • Crating
  • Vehicle shipping
  • Short-term and long-term storage
  • 30 days of free storage during a move

  • Local
  • Intrastate
  • Interstate
  • Overseas
  • Auto transportation

  • Commercial
  • Military

International Van Lines doesn’t offer significant discounts or advertise price-matching like some providers. But it has a 15% senior discount and military discount on specific services on top of its competitive rates.

Get 10% Off Your Next Move

With more than 25 years of industry experience, American Van Lines (AVL) has a solid reputation, offers a large range of services, and has highly qualified moving crews. This full-service moving company is specially positioned because it operates strictly as a carrier. That is, all services are handled by in-house employees — and never outsourced to third parties.

Get a free quote from American Van Lines.

This accountability helps AVL maintain high customer service. The company conducts background checks and drug screens all employees before they start their training, allowing it to keep your quality of service high and your personal belongings protected.

I’ve chosen American Van Lines as one of my top providers because of its guaranteed flat-rate pricing, which is atypical among major moving companies. Flat-rate pricing ensures you’ll never face billing discrepancies or hidden fees.

Flat-rate pricing for all moves
Price matching available
Moving shuttles between major cities
Online quotes are not available
Inconsistent customer service reported in customer reviews

This full-service moving company offers enough services to meet nearly every family’s moving needs. AVL has special corporate services, which most of its competitors don’t, such as:

  • Packing and unpacking
  • Furniture disassembly and reassembly
  • Storage options
  • Certified apartment and household movers
  • Crating for big items like pianos, bed frames, or flat-screen TVs
  • Specialty packing services for antiques, musical instruments, and other delicate items
  • Packing supplies
  • Vehicle shipping
  • Office moving services and corporate relocation

American Van Lines offers the typical range of standard moving options in New Jersey and specialized military moving and office relocation services.

  • Local moving
  • Interstate moving
  • Long-distance moving
  • Military moving

AVL advertises price-matching, a significant benefit for anyone looking to save money on their move. With price matching, you won’t have to worry about negotiating with an AVL representative. Instead, look for a better deal for comparable services from another moving company and get the written estimate documenting these details, then show your AVL representative to have your price matched.

The company may have discounts for seniors, but I couldn’t confirm the requirements or discount on its website.

One of the most appealing features about Safeway Moving is its flat rates, which guarantees you won’t face hidden fees or charges after your move. I also like that this veteran-owned company pledges integrity, commitment, and accountability for its work and donates some profits to children’s medical research.

You can rest easy knowing that this customer-oriented moving broker will follow through on a commitment to making your move seamless. It has many customer reviews sharing positive experiences about Safeway’s ability to navigate any rigid HOA and COA regulations. If you’re making a long-distance move or a move to an area with a strict HOA, I strongly recommend checking out Safeway Moving, as its reputation and service offerings are top-notch.

Customers praise Safeway’s ability to navigate tricky HOA and COA regulations

Moving APT

3.9

Our Rating

Moving APT is one of the largest moving brokers in the industry, with more than 500 partners. As a broker, the company coordinates your move by reaching out to its large affiliate network.

Get a free quote from Moving APT.

One benefit of using a moving broker like Moving APT is that its team works to find you the best deal possible through price-matching within its network. You won’t feel limited on services offered by one company because Moving APT will shop for the services you need at the best price.

In addition, you can feel good about working with a quality company because Moving APT checks its partners’ registration status, licensing, and standing to ensure it connects you only with reputable third parties. I also like Moving APT’s partner pages, like this New Jersey partner page, which ranks and delivers to-the-point information about the best New Jersey movers.

Price matches for you
Full profiles of its most-used moving partners available on website
Huge range of services offered through large moving affiliate network
Negative reviews and FMCSA complaints report price changes by local agents
Seven days’ notice is required for cancellation to receive deposit back

Among the most common services Moving APT coordinates in New Jersey are:

  • Packing

With more than 500 moving partners, Moving APT can arrange most moves to or within New Jersey:

  • Local
  • International
  • Long-distance
  • Commercial

Moving APT doesn’t advertise specific discounts because the company directs moves to other local companies. However, Moving APT saves you time and money by shopping around with its partners to see who best can coordinate your move at the lowest price.

Most Customizable Moving Experience

JK Moving Services

4.2

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

JK Moving Services has built a strong reputation as one of the most customer-friendly moving companies in the industry. If you’re looking for one-on-one customer service, JK Moving Services is one of my top picks.

This company is a top pick for this main reason: it assigns to you a dedicated moving coordinator who is with you every step of the moving process, including the in-home survey.

The company vets, does background checks, and trains its moving crews in fully furnished training homes in its warehouse to ensure the team is consistent and comfortable with its moving techniques. This extra step ensures that untrained movers aren’t practicing their technique in your home. I also like JK’s GPS tracking system, which gives updates about your shipment’s location, lowering your stress levels about your items being lost.

24/7 customer support and dedicated move coordinator
Helpful financing options through Enhancify
Wide variety of specialty services
Service quality varies based on local partner
Limited range for local New Jersey moves

As a moving broker, JK Moving Services provides many services through its local New Jersey partners. Its services will depend on local partner availability, but the company frequently coordinates these services:

  • Packing and unpacking
  • Auto relocation
  • Loading and unloading
  • Crating
  • Freighting
  • Business storage services (short-term and long-term)
  • Archive services
  • Furniture wrapping
  • GPS shipment tracking
  • Financing assistance
  • Transportation and delivery on moving trucks
  • Climate-controlled storage options (short-term and long-term)
  • Optional full-value protection

Unfortunately, JK Moving Services has limited options for local New Jersey moves, but it offers plenty of opportunities for anyone making a bigger move:

  • Long-distance moving
  • Government moving
  • International moving
  • Speciality New Jersey commercial moves (data centers, corporate relocation, laboratory moves, and other specialized services)

While JK Moving Services doesn’t advertise special discounts, the company has special financing options through Enhancify, a home improvement loan company. Enhancify can finance your move with APR rates as low as 0%, depending on your credit.

Best Vehicle Shipping Options

Allied Van Lines

4.2

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
No current offers available.

Allied Van Lines is my top recommendation for anyone interested in vehicle shipping services for a big move. Allied offers in-house vehicle shipping, meaning it uses its trucks to transport cars, RVs, boats, and other vehicles.

Get a free quote from Allied Van Lines.

This vehicle shipping service alone sets AVL apart from most moving providers, many of whom outsource vehicle transportation. That can make the quality of the service suspect.

For even more peace of mind, Allied has an auto guarantee that protects your vehicle during shipping. This guarantee is unlike anything I’ve found from other movers. You also won’t be stranded without a car if your vehicle shipment is late, as Allied will provide you with a rental car. Overall, Allied is my top pick for vehicle shipping and offers impressive availability in 50 states and quality customer service via its extensive network of moving agents.

In-house vehicle shipping and auto guarantee
GPS tracking for all moves
Budget-friendly moving container service available (loading and unloading included)
Customers report that the claims process for damages is time-consuming
Long quote process for long-distance moves

Allied Van Lines offers a full range of services, from DIY moving options to complete full-service moving packages:

  • Auto and boat transportation
  • Packing and unpacking
  • Furniture disassembly and reassembly
  • DIY moving container service
  • Loading and unloading
  • Storage for in-transit items
  • Specialty packing for delicate items
  • Vehicle guarantees
  • Extended insurance coverage
  • Long-term storage arrangement

Allied Van Lines offers enough moving options for most homeowners moving to or within the Garden State. It has multiple New Jersey locations, including offices in Elizabeth, Bound Brook, Burlington, and Fair Lawn. It provides:

  • Local moving
  • Interstate moving
  • International moving

Allied customers report a senior discount between 10% and 15%, but I couldn’t confirm this or any other discounts on its website. I recommend speaking with an Allied representative about any discounts or promotions you may qualify for to secure the best deal possible.

Best Overall Container Service

U-Pack

3.5

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
$25 Off With Code BLOG25

U-Pack receives overwhelmingly positive reviews, with customers praising U-Pack for its reliable shipping and generous loading and unloading periods of three days.

Get a free quote from U-Pack.

Overall, U-Pack is my top choice for a moving container service as it offers fantastic “pay for what you use” pricing, which means you’ll never overpay for space you don’t use. This structure is unique to U-Pack, and unlike anything I’ve seen from similar services that usually charge flat rates.

U-Pack’s 240 service centers throughout the country offer plenty of options when requesting a moving trailer or a smaller ReloCube for your DIY move. To use U-Pack’s service, make arrangements with U-Pack to drop-off your moving containers within three days before your move. Then load your container, and call U-Pack to arrange for a qualified driver to pick up the container and drop it off at your new home.

“Pay for what you use” pricing structure
Widely available (240 locations in the USA and Canada)
Storage solutions available
No local New Jersey moves (less than 150 miles)
Finding large parking accommodations for ReloCubs and trailers can be challenging

As a moving container company, U-Pack doesn’t offer add-on services like packing, auto transportation, or home staging, as other full-service moving providers often do. Still, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly moving container service, U-Pack is an excellent choice for its great pricing, availability, and storage solutions.

U-Pack is a moving container company offering long-distance moving solutions for moves of 150 miles or longer. It doesn’t make local moves.

U-Pack occasionally offers promo codes through its blog, such as this coupon post featuring a $25 off code. It also advertises a discount for active military members and recommends asking about senior and student discounts.

North American Van Lines

4.0

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
Seniors Get 40–65% Off

With more than 85 years of experience, North American Van Lines’ (NAVL) team of movers can execute just about any move or service you need in New Jersey. From full-service to partial-pack to its local-move-friendly BlueExpress program, NAVL offers a variety of services.

Get a free quote from NAVL.

The BlueExpress program is a full-service, container-like moving option for smaller interstate moves. The nice thing about this moving container option is that you can pack the containers yourself or opt for the NAVL team to pack your items.

Lastly, I love NAVL’s customer-friendly pricing structure, which lets you set “not to exceed” and “bottom line” price limits. You’ll never pay more than your limit unless you opt for different services or your inventory changes.

It’s variable pricing structure is ideal for clients on a budget
Provides a dedicated personal move coordinator for all relocations
A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau
Specialty services depend on local partner availability
Previous clients report complicated claims processes for damage

As a full-service moving company, NAVL offers many moving services along with standout moving insurance coverage options, which I recommend taking advantage of for that extra peace of mind:

  • Basic liability coverage
  • Full-valuation coverage
  • Packing and unpacking
  • Fragile item packing
  • Loading and unloading
  • Auto transport
  • Junk removal
  • Storage services
  • Crane van for oversized items
  • Furniture disassembly and reassembly
  • Appliance disconnection and reconnection
  • Packing materials

NAVL provides the following moving options for clients within New Jersey:

  • Local moving
  • Long distance moves
  • Interstate moves
  • International moves (over 175 countries included)

North American Van Lines doesn’t offer many discounts, but the company is a clear standout for senior citizens. If you’re a part of the Senior Citizens League, you may be eligible for between 40% to 65% off certain moving services, which is a much higher discount than any other senior discount from a moving provider.

Best Solution For Local Moves

PODS

3.2

Our Rating

Limited Time Offer:
30% Off Storage

PODS has a special Big City Service to simplify big city moving and storage. Instead of dropping off the moving container outside your home or in a parking space, the moving pod stays on the truck in the street while you load it. Certified drivers are trained to operate and secure proper permits for your city. Increased security is another feature of the Big City Service, as the driver will stay with your container during the process.

PODS is my top choice for a moving container service for local moves, as U-Pack, my other top moving container service, doesn’t offer local moves at this time. If you’re making a small move in New Jersey or a move to a big city, PODS offers tailored, budget-friendly moving options with no surprise pricing.

Special Big City Service (no driveway required)
Budget-friendly services
Several storage options and container sizes offered
Only available in select parts of North New Jersey
No online booking for long-distance moves

PODS is a self-serve moving container service, so it doesn’t offer full-service moving options like junk removal, home staging, or furniture reassembly. But PODS can connect you with service providers to make your move easier. It can supply:

  • Storage services
  • Moving container services
  • Loading and unloading (offered through a third-party partner)

PODS is a moving container service offering several moving options, but its services are limited to North New Jersey at this point:

  • Local moves (limited to North Jersey)
  • Long-distance moves (limited to North Jersey)

PODS offers a range of discounts, including one for 10% for service members. It also has seasonal deals and promotional packages. Its discounts frequently change, so I recommend looking at the PODS’ promotional page for the most up-to-date information.

How Much Do Top Moving Companies Typically Charge in New Jersey?

Movers base their costs on many factors, including the cost of living, gas, traffic, services, partner costs, distance, state taxes, and more.

To help you get a clear picture of what your move will cost, the following table provides a snapshot of average move costs throughout the United States. New Jersey is a pricier state to move to, so prices will likely be on the higher side of the average.

How Can You Negotiate With the Top Moving Companies and Get Discounts?

Negotiating lets you control your moving experience and budget. It also secures you a better deal. Gain your bargaining power by gathering multiple free quotes from reputable movers for comparable services. Get everything in writing from each company, including a complete home inventory list and opted-for services. Then, ask your preferred mover if it can match the better offer. Many companies, including American Van Lines, offer price-matching services or will price match to keep you as a customer.

Other ways to save money include asking your moving representative about available deals or package discounts. If you can move during off-peak months or during the work week instead of a weekend, you’re likely to shave a bit off more from your moving cost.

Today’s Homeowner Tips
Many people forget to ask about hidden fees or possible after-charges during their negotiation. But this is essential. You don’t want to be surprised with a higher price. Politely ask your moving representative about the company’s pricing structure and if flat rate pricing or binding estimates are available to avoid this unfortunate situation.

How Can You Avoid Moving Scams From Bad Moving Companies

Moving scams are any actions that result in you paying more than expected, having your personal belongings stolen, held hostage, or any other coordinated problems during your move to get you to pay more money. Not only do moving scams cost you time and money, but also can result in you losing your personal belongings — a scary prospect for anyone.

Here are the most common moving industry scams and how to avoid them:

  • Large down payments: Most reputable companies require a down payment, but companies asking for more than 20% to 25%, the industry standard, should be looked at cautiously. If a company asks for a down payment of 40% or more, I recommend moving on to a different company.
  • No contract: Get everything in writing. Without written proof of the services, your home inventory, and the moving estimate, you have nothing to argue with should a moving company try to scam you or change services or pricing last minute. Watch out for companies that don’t use contracts or offer partial contracts that are missing critical information or signatures. That’s an easy way for a moving company to take your belongings and charge you more if you’re left with no written proof of the moving cost.
  • No available company information: If the company doesn’t have a website, physical address, listed phone number, or easily accessible licensing information, it’s a serious red flag. In New Jersey, all moving companies need to be licensed through the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. Double-check that the licensing number is valid before signing any contracts.
Today’s Homeowner Tips

Listen to your gut. If something feels off about any interactions with a moving representative, there is likely a good reason that you are feeling uneasy. Take your time to vet the company, ask plenty of questions, and get everything in writing.

What Factors Should You Consider When Choosing a Top Moving Company?

Choosing the best moving company for your move depends on several factors, such as:

  • Your budget: Consider what you can afford to pay to move. If your budget is tight, consider a DIY service like U-Pack, or look into companies like JK Moving Services, which has myriad financing options.
  • Your timeline: How long do you have until your move date? You can afford to shop around and negotiate with movers if you have at least eight weeks until your move date. If you have less than six weeks to move, you’ll need to be less choosy as more movers will already be booked up.
  • Your distance: Are you making a local or long-distance move? Certain moving companies, like Safeway or U-Pack, only offer long-distance moves to New Jersey. The type of move and distance will immediately help you eliminate some companies from your list.
  • Your items: Do you have any specialty items that need extra care, such as hot tubs, cars, artwork, grandfather clocks, or antiques? Choose a full-service company with specialty services, like International Van Lines or American Van Lines, to help you coordinate your move if you need special services.
  • Your preferences: What aspects of moving are you most stressed about? Consider what moving services, such as packing options or auto shipping, will alleviate your stress levels and save you the most time.

So, What Is the Best Moving Company in New Jersey?

No matter how much you plan, moving is a stress-filled experience because of how many variables you have to handle — packing, labeling, handling the turning off and on of utilities, cable and other services, traveling to your new home, and more. Hiring professional movers removes some anxiety so you can focus on enjoying your new home and a new location in New Jersey and all it has to offer.

The best moving company in New Jersey is International Van Lines because of its unmatched customer service and moving services. If your next move involves relocating between big cities in New Jersey, I recommend American Van Lines for its city shuttle service or PODS for a DIY move because of its Big City Service. Don’t just take my word for it: check out multiple providers and gather a couple of free moving quotes to assess how much your New Jersey move will cost from different providers before making your final decision.

FAQs About The Best Moving Companies in New Jersey?

What is the hourly rate for movers in New Jersey?

On average, New Jersey movers cost $60 to $65 an hour for simple labor, not including specialty services like vehicle shipping, furniture wrapping, or appliance disconnection.

How do I check if a moving company is licensed in New Jersey?

Visit the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs to vet your New Jersey moving company and check that it is fully registered. If a professional moving company isn’t licensed, this is a major red flag. Move on to another company.

When is the best time to schedule a move in New Jersey?

New Jersey experiences a lot of traffic because of its location between New York City and Philadelphia, with many other large urban cities in New Jersey. And the reality is, New Jersey’s roads are busy most of the year. But scheduling a move date with an early start can help you and your movers avoid traffic jams.

What is the cheapest way to move in New Jersey?

The cheapest way to move in New Jersey is to complete a DIY move by either renting a moving truck or trailer or hiring a moving container company.

Methodology: How We Ranked The Best Moving Companies in New Jersey

At Today’s Homeowner, we strive to bring you the most transparent, accurate information for your home improvement projects. Our moving company ratings emphasize what matters most to you — reputable, affordable companies able to tackle a wide range of packing and moving tasks.

Our ratings are based on publicly available information about each company, secret shopping online and over the phone, customer-review analysis, and interviews with former and current professional movers.

A company can earn a maximum of 100 points across four categories converted to a five-star scale. We researched and analyzed dozens of full- and self-service moving companies and developed the following formula:

  • Transparency (30 Points): We awarded top points to companies that supplied quotes quickly and provided easy-to-read moving contracts. We used the availability of sample pricing and quick quote features, GPS tracking, and clear customer service hours to determine this metric. Points were also awarded for up-front communication regarding policies, licensing, insurance, and the clear listing of added fees.
  • Basic Service Options (20 Points): While this may seem like a given for most movers, a strong basic service profile is not guaranteed when you book your move. Movers that offer local, long-distance, and international moving, while providing packing and loading with their basic service packages rate highly here.
  • Customization Options (30 Points): Aside from basic services, a comprehensive list of added services indicates a mover’s quality. Assembly and disassembly, valuation coverage, piano moving, car shipping, and similar add-ons indicate a mover that puts customer service first.
  • Reputation (20 Points): We assessed each mover’s Better Business Bureau (BBB) profile. We weighed BBB ratings and the company’s complaint response rate to calculate this metric.

We monitor company data on an ongoing basis to keep rankings and information up to date.
