Our Atlas Van Lines Review

Atlas movers have more than proven themselves among the best options for full-service moving in the U.S. Despite its large service area. Atlas has largely managed to overcome a common pitfall of large movers.

Each local agent puts its workers through a fairly thorough training program called Atlas Academy. While this is more focused on the customer service side of the business than on the movers themselves, it helps to ensure quality estimates and care at all points throughout the moving process.

As with many other movers of this size, Atlas Moving is only as good as the quality of the local agent in your area.

Despite Atlas Academy, some poor customer experiences still feature pricing misunderstandings, poor labor, and low-quality of add-on services at specific locations. Ultimately, you’ll have to do your due diligence and look into customer reviews for your local branch before you book.

If you have a well-reviewed affiliate near you, your move to a new home should go well.

Pros & Cons of Moving with Atlas

Employees all undergo background checks
Atlas’ mobile app makes the moving process easier
AAA members get substantial discounts
Service quality and service availability vary between locations

How Much Does Atlas Cost?

Atlas Van Lines’ pricing schedule is similar to many other van lines and large-scale moving companies. Local moves (50 miles or less) are priced at hourly rates. This will typically start with a minimum fee of three to four hours. No matter how short any move may be, this means you’ll be billed a set minimum charge.

Long-distance moving costs are calculated using shipping weight and move distance. Such moves are more than 50 miles or are over state lines. For both kinds of moves, add-ons can substantially increase your costs. Local moves will account for this simply through the greater number of hours added onto the job, while long-distance moves typically have flat fees added for each.

As a bonus, any Atlas client that’s a AAA member gets free full-value protection for all their goods while in transit. This can save customers up to $600 on any move.

Here, we’ve included some average prices for moves of varying lengths for you to use as a guide when setting a budget:

1 BR2 BR3 BR4 BR
Local$1,200$1,500$2,000$2,750
250 mi$2,750$3,800$5,100$6,000
500 mi$3,100$4,100$6,000$6,700
1000 mi$3,500$4,500$6,400$8,400
2000 mi$4,300$4,900$6,800$9,000
2500 mi$4,800$5,100$7,100$10,000

What Services Does Atlas Van Lines Offer?

Now based in Evansville, Indiana, Atlas can provide many of the same services across the country. These include the following.

Local Moves

All of the professional movers Atlas provides are just that — professionals. They are fully background-checked and vetted before setting foot in any client’s home for a move. If you’re moving less than 50 miles, your local Atlas branch will likely be able to lend a hand. Whether you need a basic move or require packing services for particular items as well as unpacking services, Atlas can help.

Long-Distance Moves

With 430 locations spread throughout the U.S., Atlas Van Lines can provide quality assistance. Long-distance moving encompasses interstate and lengthier relocations within the same state. Moving quotes for such service can be scheduled on Atlas’ website and done via video call or in-person.

Military and Government Moves

As an accredited provider for the General Services Administration and a recognized carrier for the Department of Defense, Atlas is more than capable of providing leading care for all government officials and service members. On average, they handle more than 1,600 federal moves per year, giving these movers the needed experience.

Corporate Relocations

Whether you’re an employee moving on a company stipend or an entire business looking to relocate, Atlas has plenty of moving solutions for you.

Single employees should review Atlas’ SimpliCity program. This is designed for small moves and comes with specific pickup and delivery dates to ease the transition to a new home and city.

For full-scale corporate moves, you should contact them for more information. The availability of special services, like professional packing for certain items, could vary from location to location.

International Moves

Atlas International has provided such services since 1960 and now has more than 1,500 affiliates in 17 other countries around the world. They have accreditation with FIDI, as well as registration with many other regulatory bodies for international moves. In addition to their many affiliations, licensing from the Federal Maritime Commission allows them to ship your goods wherever you need them to go.

Additional Services

Atlas also provides a number of specialty services that are designed to get your household goods to their destination as quickly and as safely as possible. These include:

  • Packing and unpacking
  • Auto Transport
  • Shipping services for motorcycles and other vehicles
  • Valuation coverage options
  • Specialty moving services (for pianos, pool tables, swing sets, and more)
  • Storage services
  • Storage in transit
  • And more

What is their Service Area & Availability?

Atlas Van Lines operates like a local and long-distance mover throughout all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Canada. The availability of certain services can vary from location to location, but you’ll be able to find Atlas representatives and agents working in most areas.

How To Schedule With Atlas Van Lines

Booking a move with Atlas is similar to booking with any other large van line or nationwide mover. This provider doesn’t offer instant online quotes. However, you can still start your booking process online or by calling Atlas’ phone number, 1-800-638-9797. You’ll be put in contact with a customer service representative, who will be in charge of setting up a time for a virtual or in-person estimate. You’ll only be given a pricing figure after this estimate is complete.

Suppose you’re planning on moving to Atlas. In that case, we recommend downloading the mobile app to ease the process and to take full advantage of this company’s virtual estimates and GPS tracking capabilities. Once you’ve finalized your move date, you can move forward with the planning process, including packing with packing materials, signing up for utility services at your new home, and more.

Before booking with any moving company, you should check for the following. Feel free to ask for proof of all relevant registrations and insurance coverage prior to booking. All reputable movers will happily provide this when asked.

  • FMCSA registration: All interstate moving companies have to maintain federal registration via the FMCSA. This governing body also requires active USDOT and MC numbers of all movers. You can use these to look up a provider’s complaint history and registration status here.
  • State registration: Most states have their own governing bodies for moving companies. In some cases, this will include tariff regulations. At the very least, they will require basic business licensing, which you should check on before booking with any mover.
  • Workers’ compensation: All moving companies have to carry multiple insurance policies in order to operate legally. Workers’ compensation provides clients with protection in the event of a work-related injury during a move.
  • Released liability: This provides you with a baseline level of reimbursement if your goods are lost or damaged. Such coverage is included in your move’s base cost, but at $0.60 per pound, per item, it won’t cover the value of most goods. Movers also provide valuation options at added costs.

Generally, the planning process for most moves should look like this:

  • 8 weeks prior: Begin researching movers in your area by looking into customer reviews. Schedule quotes with all whose service profile match your needs. Take a thorough inventory list of your home while writing down all add-on services you may need. Save these lists for reference during any moving quote. Between then and the six-week mark, begin packing non-essential items.
  • 6 weeks prior: You should be fielding quotes from different movers around this time. Narrow your options down based on pricing, customer service record, and service profile. Continue packing a box or two at a time, depending on the size of your home.
  • 4 weeks prior: Book your move and contact utility service providers near your new home.
  • Moving week: Make plans for the care of any children and pets on moving day. If you’ve packed properly, you shouldn’t have more than a portion of your kitchen and some essential goods to pack.
  • Moving day: Have a moving bag prepared, with snacks and water for yourself. You should have a few changes of clothing and toiletries on-hand if you’re staging a multi-day move. You should keep any and all essential documents on your person, including housing documents, forms of identification, financial paperwork, and anything else you deem important. Be sure to keep water on hand for your movers, as well as cash for a tip, if you plan on giving one at the end of your move.

Atlas Van Lines Reviews From Actual Customers

Customer reviews are of massive importance when evaluating any moving company. Whether

you’re hiring labor assistance to move a single piece of furniture or are planning a cross-country move, quality assurances are important. Reviews will tell you far more about a given mover’s adherence to stated policies and customer treatment than an estimate can. Reviews from Google, Yelp, Better Business Bureau, and social media are all valid and will help you narrow down your options for any move.

Here, we’ve included a couple of actual reviews from Atlas customers. You should look into reviews from your local Atlas affiliate before booking.

“James and crew through Atlantic Relocation were amazing! We moved cross country, and they took great care of our things, worked in record time, and assembled everything, so we were ready to go. They even took the time to move things into different positions when we couldn’t make up our minds on placement in the living room. They were friendly and took great care with the furnishings and the home. I can’t say enough good things about them. Thank you!”

Amanda

“The crew and drivers who handled the packing, loading, and unloading were great. While friendly, the contact at Atlas was incompetent. Throughout the process, she provided inaccurate, incomplete, or incorrect information–this included a low weight estimate (resulting in a higher than expected cost), surprise need for crating on the day of the move (resulting in a higher than expected cost), incorrect updates on delivery day, short notice cancellation for delivery, etc.  When I tried to discuss this with Atlas management, the contact was unable to hear my concerns and was rude (cursed at me), dismissive, and uninterested in truly resolving the situation. This was my third time using Atlas, and unfortunately, it will be my last–the first two jobs were great, but clearly they’ve experienced a decline in quality of service. I would strongly recommend finding a moving company other than Atlas.”

The Good

Once again, the quality of your moving experience will depend on the quality of the Atlas agent you book with. Positive moves with Atlas feature quality workers and packers who are consistently on time for their jobs and demonstrate care.

The Bad

Many of the negative experiences with Atlas Van Lines moves feature poor communication and mishandling of moving quotes. Since miscommunication on pricing is one of the most common causes of poor moving experiences regardless of provider, you should always request copies of your moving contract and estimate once you book.

Today’s Homeowner Rating Methodology

At Today’s Homeowner, our primary goals are to be a reliable source of information and to be totally transparent to our readers. With that in mind, we’ve developed the following formula to render objective ratings – on a scale of 10 points – for the moving companies we review.

  • Transparency (3.0): Communication and being fully straightforward regarding company policies and licensing are incredibly important. A given mover’s willingness to display these, to supply quick quotes, and to provide clearly-worded moving contracts all factor into the three points within this single rating criteria.
  • Cost (2.5): A mover’s cost relative to industry averages, as well as accessibility to cost data play a role in the customer experience as much as anything else. We know that being sure of what you’re paying – and being confident that you’re not overpaying – will ultimately make for a positive move. We’ve weighted cost factors accordingly in our ratings.
  • Customer Service (2.0): Establishing an easy line of contact with your movers during the booking process or during the move itself is a huge asset for any moving client. The stress of moving, in general, can be greatly eased by knowing you can talk to a licensed professional whenever you need to, which is why we’ve listed this as a key rating category. This is where customer reviews come into play; since the majority of complaints stem from poor customer service, feedback from BBB, Yelp, Google, and other review platforms factor into this criteria.
  • Services Offered (1.5): This rate lower on our priority list than many would think, simply due to the fact that many movers provide a similar line of services. However, breadth of service offerings does still vary to a degree.
  • Customization Options (1.0): Having the autonomy to fully customize your move should rate highly on any moving checklist. Here, we’ve taken moving package customization ability, as well as pricing for more involved add-ons. Steep pricing for such services can provide something of a soft barrier for clients looking to add to their move, and we’ve taken this into consideration.
