Eco-friendly mattresses aren’t made with harmful VOCs and don’t cause adverse health effects. Unlike conventional mattresses, eco-friendly mattresses are those made of natural materials like organic wool or organic cotton (neither of which contain any chemicals or flame retardants), and are made with sustainable manufacturing processes, usually right here in the United States.
Here are nine of our favorite eco-friendly mattress brands.
Avocado makes some of the most environmentally conscious products in the sleep industry. The Avocado Green Mattress features 100% natural latex rubber that’s resistant to mold, mildew, and bacteria, contains natural wool with moisture-wicking and temperature-control properties and is made with certified organic cotton. Polyurethane foams and toxic fire retardants aren’t used. Note that all Avocado mattresses and pillows are GREENGUARD Gold certified by UL Environment.
2. Brentwood Home
Brentwood Home creates its products from natural, organic, and non-toxic materials at its factory in Los Angeles. Best known for its natural latex mattress, Brentwood Home maintains that natural latex offers benefits like pressure relief and supportive bounce.
All of Brentwood Home’s materials meet Golden State Standards for environmental responsibility and its natural latex bedding doesn’t contain harmful chemicals or strong odors.
The Casper team ensures that all foams used in its mattresses meet strict environmental standards. Casper’s latex is Oeko-Tex certified and the rest of its foams are CertiPUR certified, meaning they’re free of harmful, ozone-depleting chemicals and are low in VOC emissions.
Casper mattresses don’t contain any flame retardant chemicals; instead, they contain a proprietary woven silica sock just under the mattress cover. In the event of a fire, the sock melts on itself and suffocates the oxygen needed for the fire to burn.
Eve Sleep mattresses contain a next-generation memory foam top layer that molds around your body and springs back to its original shape as soon as you get off the mattress. The Eve mattress is composed of five layers (from top to bottom):
An adaptable fabric top cover that is flame-retardant and naturally anti-allergenic
A contouring, breathable memory foam layer that is CertiPUR certified and pressure-relieving
A revolutionary cooling layer that is 30 times more breathable than conventional memory foam and balances the body’s microclimate during sleep
A supportive base layer that’s CertiPUR certified
An anti-slip base that’s Oeko-Tex certified and washable
Not only are Ghostbed mattresses CertiPUR certified, but they come in eco-friendly packaging. With its vacuum-seal wrapping, Ghostbed helps keep the earth green by reducing wasted cardboard and packaging materials and maximizing space in freight trucks by up to 300%. This effort results in fewer trucks on the road, less gas used, and less travel pollution.
Leesa provides eco-friendly mattresses (all foam mattresses are CertiPUR certified and fully encased in a fire retardant sock made up of a proprietary blend of fibers) and is one of the most socially responsible mattress brands in the industry.
For every mattress sold, Leesa plants a tree; and for every 10 mattresses sold, Leesa donates custom-made mattresses to a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that serves homeless and at-risk men, women, and children.
Saatva produces luxury innerspring mattresses that contain a certified organic cotton cover and plant-based foam. Another benefit: Saatva mattresses are produced right here in the US.
Zenhaven mattresses are made of 100% Talalay latex, which is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mold, dust mites, and other allergens. The mattresses also contain natural latex, 100% organic New Zealand wool, and organic cotton. Since the Talalay manufacturing process is entirely water based, hardly any environmentally harmful byproducts are produced.
9. Live and Sleep
This company makes extremely comfortable, hypoallergenic mattresses that are antibacterial and dust mite resistant. Live and Sleep believes that chemicals, gases, and toxins should be left out of your mattress and uses an open cell memory foam technology to keep mattresses cool and comfortable during sleep.
