Tour a Modern Jewel at 15 Union Square West

The former Tiffany and Company headquarters at 15 Union Square West—once apart of a luxury retail corridor known as “Ladies’ Mile”—was erected in 1870 in of-the-era cast-iron framework: spectacular, ornate, stately, and—half a century later—falling apart. Amalgamated Bank moved into the building in 1925, and in 1952, a piece of the original cast iron fell off the facade and struck a passerby. Considered a hazard, the five-story building was stripped of its ironwork and encased in white brick, the splendor of the landmark laying dormant for another 50 years.

In 2007, Brack Capital Real Estate enlisted architect Eran Chen and interior designer Vincente Wolf to convert the pre-war building at 15th Street and Union Square West into a glassy black geode of a building: it’s boxy and modern and announces itself with its satiny blocks of energy that stack to a new 12-story pitch.

The conversion preserved the only remaining iron work—its arches, which can be seen in the day if you catch the light just right. But when illuminated at night, hints of the original building can be seen encased in a sarcophagus of zinc and glass, glimpses of the building’s past preserved in glassy backlight. A perfect jewel in a black satin box. We stepped inside a three-bedroom apartment on the third floor of 15 Union Square West (currently listed by Corcoran) to get a glimpse of the beautiful interiors of this architectural gem.
