Your Best Options for a Dishwasher Warranty

Fifty-nine percent of American homes have a dishwasher. If your dishwasher breaks, you can always hand-wash dishes, but using a dishwasher actually costs less than hand washing and is better for the environment. So, getting it fixed is important.

When you buy a dishwasher, most manufacturers include a warranty plan with the purchase. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean every component is covered.

Home warranties offer something appliance warranties don’t: coverage for everyday wear and tear, regardless of how long you’ve owned the appliance. After researching the top home warranty providers, we’ve found that Choice Home Warranty offers some of the best dishwasher warranty coverage. Best of all, repairs and replacements on your dishwasher are included in more than one Choice Home Warranty plan.

Comparison of warranties from top dishwasher manufacturers

There are more than a dozen dishwasher brands that offer products varying in size, color, look, features, and most surprisingly, warranty plans. Some plans are included with purchase, some are not, but here’s what we know for certain: not all warranties are created equal.

We compare the top dishwasher companies, providing warranty details for each:

With built-in Bosch dishwashers, you get the following repairs and replacements as part of your Bosch dishwasher warranty coverage:

  • One-year limited warranty on the entire appliance, parts, and labor
  • In years 2–5 of ownership, microprocessor or printed circuit board, parts only
  • In years 2–5 of ownership, racks (without rack components), parts only
  • Lifetime warranty on rust-through on inner tub liner, parts only

When you purchase a GE dishwasher, you have to pay close attention to the warranty terms, because each model comes with different warranty coverage. For Model PDW7300J, for example, the GE dishwasher warranty covers the following:

  • One-year term: Any part of the dishwasher will be replaced if it fails due to defects in materials or workmanship. Includes free labor and related service costs.
  • Second-year of purchase: Any part of a dishwasher will be replaced if it fails due to defects in materials or workmanship. Labor and associated service costs are not covered.
  • Third through the fifth year of ownership: Replacement of racks or electronic control board is included, should they fail due to defects in materials or workmanship. Labor and associated costs are not covered.
  • Lifetime warranty: Replacement of rub or door liner should either fail due to a defect in materials or workmanship. This includes free labor and related service costs:

If you have Model GSM1800J, you only get the following covered in your appliance warranty:

  • One-year term: Any part of a dishwasher will be replaced should it fail due to a defect in materials or workmanship. This includes free labor and related service costs.

Whirlpool offers major appliance limited warranties, but for a dishwasher warranty, their basic coverage is quite limited compared to other manufacturers. Here’s what you can expect:

  • One-year term: Factory-specified replacement parts and repair labor will be included for defects in materials or workmanship that existed when the appliance was purchased.
  • If you receive a replacement within that first year of ownership, the second dishwasher will take the term of the first appliance (so if it’s replaced two weeks before the end of the term, the new appliance is only covered for two weeks by the manufacturer’s warranty).

If you have a Whirlpool Gold Series dishwasher warranty, you get much more extensive coverage, including, but not limited to:

  • Lifetime warranty: Replacement costs and labor costs for stainless steel tub and inner door (featured on select models) are included should either fail to contain water because of defects in materials or workmanship, so long as service is provided by a service company chosen by Whirlpool.

For more information on the Gold Series warranty, which is more extensive, call the Whirlpool dishwasher warranty phone number: 1.866.333.4591.

The KitchenAid dishwasher warranty includes the following coverage:

  • Two-year term: Repair or replacement of factory-specified parts due to defects in materials or workmanship will be covered, as well as labor costs associated with service.
  • Third through the fifth year of ownership: Repair or replacement of the following factory-specified parts due to defects in materials or workmanship will be covered: upper and lower drawer nylon dish racks, nylon cup shelves, and silverware baskets. Labor costs are not covered.

When you purchase a Miele dishwasher, whether from the company, from a distributor, a dealer, or the manufacturer’s representative, you are guaranteed the following:

  • The replacement cost of parts will be covered if defects are present due to materials or workmanship. Labor costs will also be covered within one year from the installation date or 18 months from the purchase date, whichever is later.
  • Second-year of ownership: The replacement cost of parts will be covered if defects are present due to materials or workmanship, but only if the appliance was installed by an Authorized Miele Installer. If not, the second-year coverage will not be given.

The Maytag dishwasher warranty includes a 10-year term. It is one of the only manufacturers to offer this long of a term on dishwashers, but that doesn’t mean all parts and labor costs are covered. Here’s what you can expect:

  • One-year term: Replacement on factory-specified replacement parts, as well as labor costs associated with repair due to defects in materials or workmanship that existed when the appliance was purchased.
  • Second through tenth years of ownership: Replacement of the following factory-specified replacement parts due to defects in materials or workmanship that existed when the appliance was purchased: upper and lower racks (excluding cup shelves and silverware basket), chopper blade, stainless steel tub, and inner door liner. Labor costs are not included.

Additional types of dishwasher warranties

Nearly a third of all consumers have purchased a protection plan, according to a comprehensive study completed by The Warranty Group. When buying a major appliance, you want to ensure that if it breaks within a few months of buying it, you can get a repair or a replacement without any additional costs.

Since a dishwasher typically lasts anywhere from seven to 12 years, with the average life expectancy being nine to 10, you’ll want to get coverage that extends beyond the manufacturer’s warranty. That’s especially true since the warranty doesn’t account for natural everyday wear and tear.

Other types of warranties not provided by the manufacturer include extended warranties and home warranties, as mentioned. Here are the major differences:

Extended warranties are offered by third parties. Some manufacturers will recommend a third-party warranty that aligns with their appliance warranty.

SquareTrade warranty plans, offered by Allstate, are considered an extension of a manufacturer’s warranty. Their contract doesn’t begin until after the manufacturer’s warranty ends, with the exception of the Accident Damage plan, which covers accidental damage on your appliance from the first day of purchasing your appliance.

SquareTrade is considered an extended warranty. The extended warranty only covers per-item appliances, so you can’t get your SquareTrade extended warranty to cover more than one appliance. The term length depends on your chosen plan but ranges from one to five years. You must buy a SquareTrade within 30 days of buying your appliance, or you will not get coverage.

This is not the case for a home warranty plan, which covers more than just one appliance and does not need to be purchased within a set time period. You can get home warranty coverage on your dishwasher whether you purchased the appliance yesterday or acquired it as a homeowner (and never actually bought it yourself).

Manufacturer warranties are very limited in coverage, term length, and types of repairs. If an accident occurs or if the appliance breaks down after years of wear and tear, the manufacturer’s warranty won’t cover the costs. That’s why home warranty plans offer a better solution.

Dishwasher coverage from Choice Home Warranty

Choice Home Warranty covers dishwasher repair and replacement in both their Basic Plan and Total Plan, but what exactly is covered?

When you purchase a home warranty agreement with Choice Home Warranty, you can rest assured knowing that all components and parts of the refrigerator are covered, with the exception of the following.

Here are things to look for in the fine print of dishwasher appliance warranties:

  • The dishwashing appliance must be installed, maintained, and operated according to the manufacturer’s instructions in order to qualify for repairs or replacements.
  • The majority of manufacturer dishwasher warranties are considered limited warranties, meaning they do not cover repair or replacement on all parts and components.
  • Most manufacturers will not pay for repairs or replacements if the appliance was improperly installed. When having a professional install the dishwasher, make sure you save a record of the interaction, in case of the manufacturer questions this.
  • Most commercial, non-residential appliances will not be covered by a manufacturer appliance warranty.
  • Damages from accidents, floods, fires, or misuse are not typically covered in these warranties.
  • Pickup and delivery are not typically included in a manufacturer’s warranty.
  • Almost all the dishwasher appliance warranties are only valid in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada.
  • Most manufacturers require product registration within a certain period. If you don’t register the product within that period, you may not get the full benefits of the warranty.

If your dishwasher breaks one year and one day after the date of purchase, you’ll likely end up paying for labor and service costs required for repair and replacement.

Costs associated with dishwasher repair and replacement

Typical labor costs a homeowner $300 on average. For new dishwasher installation, costs can range from $175 to $475 for labor. Simply removing a dishwasher costs approximately $100 to $150. Since both plumbing and electrical are involved, it is best to hire a professional to fix your dishwasher should it break. But fixing a dishwasher can be expensive, especially if you’re not prepared for it.

Removing and replacing a dishwasher, in total, costs anywhere from $350 to $600. That doesn’t include the cost of the appliance and dishwashers can cost anywhere from $250 to $1,000.

Dishwasher warranty exclusions:

  • Racks
  • Baskets
  • Rollers
  • Hinges
  • Handles
  • Doors
  • Door gaskets
  • Damage caused by broken glass
  • Cleaning

Save on costs with home warranty plans

When you purchase a home warranty plan, you can save significantly on repairs, replacements, and labor costs. A home warranty plan is offered by home warranty providers and is not the same as homeowner’s insurance, which covers the costs of repairs or replacements that occur due to theft, natural disasters, fires, etc.

A home warranty plan, in contrast, is a service agreement that covers repairs and replacements of home appliances and major home systems. If you have a home warranty plan, you not only get peace of mind knowing that if something breaks, you have a network of experts who can fix it, but you also save on repairs and replacements. You’ll simply pay a flat service fee for the labor, even if labor includes a repair or installation.

Home warranty plans cover more than just dishwashers. They cover a wide range of appliances and home systems, including but not limited to heating systems, plumbing systems, electrical systems, ovens, ranges, and stoves. Some providers have two warranty plans offers one for home systems and one for home appliances.

Choice Home Warranty is different because they provide customizable plans. Their Basic Plan includes both systems and appliances. It covers a dishwasher, as well as your electrical system, garage door opener, built-in microwave, etc. Their Total Plan covers all the systems and appliances in the Basic Plan, plus a few more. You can also add optional coverage for less common items, such as a pool or spa.
