Inside a Former Vogue Editor’s Brooklyn Brownstone

By Emily McCrary-Ruiz-Esparza

If you were strolling this quiet residential street in Stuyvesant Heights, you might very likely walk by this turn-of-the-century brownstone on Putnam Avenue. Tucked among a host flat-faced brownstones, all dressed in understated elegance, old-style simplicity, this four-story brownstone looks uniform and stately like its neighbors.

But step inside, and you would be greeted by a meticulously restored home whose newborn renovation beautifully highlights its original details—white brick fireplaces, blonde basketweave and herringbone hardwoods, built-in bookcases, and dental crown molding, and embellishes with twenty-first century sensibilities—coal-black mullions against ivory walls, custom walk-in closets, top-of-the-line appliances, and the cherry: a private pool in the garden.

We stepped inside to peek this beauty of a brownstone, once owned by a Vogue editor and currently listed by Corcoran, at 663 Putnam Avenue.

The Brooklyn brownstone, at just 19 feet wide, is rich in height and depth. The front living room spills off from the home’s entrance and looks out onto Putnam Avenue. The contrast of stark whites and coal blacks throughout the home is elevated by the use of rich marbles and intense, velvety colors.

The brownstone features fireplaces throughout—even in the kitchen—whose presence imbues a fabulous sense of warmth and solitude. The bedrooms themselves are invitations to stay and rest.

The highlight of the home is its landscaped private garden with micro swimming pool. The graphite-colored privacy fence creates a sense of depth in the small space.
